People have private conversations in public but, if I join in, I’m the crazy one~
Like, – yes – those people will have to accept that people may overhear them while talking about their subject but this isn’t a new phenomenon. People have always done this.
This is just the dynamic of public spaces.
The other day a dude was using his phone on speaker in the gym. Just sat there on the machine casually having a conversation on the phone and not doing a whole lot of working out.
I asked him if he could use the phone normally and made the “hand to face” gesture and he just mumbled a “yeah” and took it off speaker.
Now if he had considered my request outlandish, presumably there would have been a little friction in this exchange? But no…he knew exactly what he was doing, why it was annoying, and immediately how to remedy it.
Why the fuck are people using speakerphone instead of the God damn normal speaker to have their conversations? They know it’s annoying.
I like to stand really close to them and then when they give you the “what?” Look or say anything, I tell them I’m just waiting to use the phone.
Don’t join in, just make as much obnoxious noise as possible
This is a pet peeve of mine. If you aren’t disabled use the damn phone as a phone and use FaceTime in private.
I don’t want to hear about the latest drama your ex is involved in and who’s doing who to god knows what. I also don’t want to be in the background while you are standing in line FaceTiming someone and they comment on the person behind them on camera.
And then the people who actually use the phone as a phone but have the most obnoxiously loud one-sided conversation.
I may be slightly biased, I use public transportation and have to listen to this shit every day. I wear hearing aids so I hear everything at one which makes it even more fun.
It took a few years, but now unless it’s really important or she thinks I’m probably not on the bus, my wife now texts to ask if I’m able to talk. I hate people who do these things and I feel incredibly uncomfortable speaking on the phone when I’m on public transit.
Same here. I know my voice is loud. I have a paralyzed vocal cord and can’t talk quietly — only loud or louder. I also just generally hate talking on the phone 😆
My voice is fairly deep, so even when I’m speaking quietly it travels. Beyond not wanting to have everyone on the bus hearing about my business, it’s fucking rude…
Oh hell no. If I’m stuck somewhere and they are having a speaker phone conversation I comment. I did this at the doctors office and the lady told me it was a private conversation and I told here she should have it in private.
I like the cut of your jib!
nice metaphore to how people use the social media nowdays… they spill their mind into a public discussion forum and then they are pissed at the “reply guy problem” and try to come up with ways to stop people from talking instead of adjusting their expectations… i get it - everyone wants to be treated nicely but come on!
People have private conversation face to face in a crowd as well - sometimes some things need to be talked about right away and the anonymity of the crowd makes it feel private enough. If you don’t know the people, then you know the convo is none of your business - so if you join in, yes, you’re viewed as the crazy one, or at least the one with not enough social inteligence.

If only there was a way to speak privately on a phone.
You can listen privately, but you have to speak normally anyway.
That’s like those halfwits who talk into their phone and hold it like a slice of (not Neapolitan) pizza.
- This isn’t a reality show
- You’re dumb enough to be on one
- If it’s not working well, shouting won’t help. You’re actively impairing its noise cancelling and you’ll only be more noise to it.
Use your phone like a phone for best results.
Are there any justifiable reasons that it’s okay to be on speakerphone in public?
Hands full, disabled, multiple people, yes. Holding the phone like an extended duck face, no.
God… And then they lean in to listen to it Like it’s an alien rock whispering secrets to them.
Most accurate visual representation.
911 while administering first aid.
Nah, I’d still prefer email
That’s precisely what I had in mind :)
Are there any justifiable reasons that it’s okay to be on speakerphone in public?
I once saw this question asked on the other site, and there was at least one good response. It was from someone who used a hearing aid, and said that for whatever reason, using the phone normally next to their ear resulted in the audio being garbled and difficult to understand, but using the speaker held a few inches away was fine, so that’s how they preferred to use it.
That does make sense, though I think modern hearing aids actually have Bluetooth capabilities so that the conversation is right through the hearing aid itself. Kinda wild.
No.
The only case I can think of is like you had to call 911 for an emergency and you want the people around you to also hear the dispatcher.
For day to day stuff, not really.
They are, by definition, not having a private conversation. It’s just parrots looking in a mirror. They genuinely think we are impressed by what they have to say. Source: grew up with a narcissist. He was wearing a Bluetooth earpiece 100% of the time until like 2020.
I don’t think that’s an okay word to say. Why don’t you use a less loaded word?
A Bluetooth headset then.
I think you forgot the /s
Or, you’re an insufferable twat I’m relieved not to know.
Hey bud if you won’t hold me close at night dont pretend like you want to join in on the call where Im scheduling my next proctoligy appointment.
Pretend it’s one of your homies talking to their mom and make loud, sexual moans.
Has anyone tried blasting music from their phones in response?
Same reaction as jumping into the convo.
That’s why you start off by screaming “Getta load of THIS!” and when it’s done you shout “Anotha One!” like DJ Khaled.
Ill never do it in public but by myself speaker phone calls are amazing. Being able to take notes or look up stuff with both hands is a game changer.
You are free to do whatever you want that makes you happy in private bud. Anything. Almost.
Yeah. When I’m working a problem with someone and need my hands free, okay. But that’s a tech call and not a procto appointment.
I’d love to use a headset, but
- New phones are shit and have no jack
- Radio earbuds are shit with shit batteries sold by shit companies for shit phones
- End of list
So I’ll talk in my private office on the speakerphone and get things done quickly. And curse ducking Samsung for copping out and ripping the jack out and making all the usual shit excuses because they can’t say “you’ll still buy it ya plebe”.
Buy a BT headset and you’re all set. My choice is the Poly Voyager Focus 2, now 3 years old and still going strong! I need it for work but use it for all the calls when I can. Look ma, no hands! And some privacy too.
