I would resort to violence, Holy shit.
I have a HiSense TV and use ADB AppControl to disable/remove the telemetry or forced updates, and Projectivy Launcher to get a home screen/launcher that doesn’t show ads. Both are free and work really well. I don’t see trash on my homescreen anymore.
That’s great, but people who don’t already own one shouldn’t support this garbage company.
No doubt. The market is shriveling up for people who want a new tv that isn’t garbo. Outside of commercial displays which are like 3-4x as expensive and have lower image quality, I don’t know of anyone making dumb tvs in a 55" plus size. Yes, you can opt not to hook them up to the internet but in a house with non-tech people, its a huge hassle to get them to want to use anything other than the built in apps. Even diy set top boxes running on a pi or shield are not as user friendly for kids or grandparents.
I don’t have an Android tv but if that day ever comes, very glad options like these exist.

Oh cool, I’ll have to checkout those other tools!

I basically left it vanilla after switching the launcher and borking the updates. We use emby for our home streaming but I am always looking for extra functionality
Until sept 2026…
Do you really think Google will approve those APKs once they have fully lockdown android (that includes Google TV)?
That’s why this push from google to kill the APK installation without their blessing infuriates me!
yeah, we’ll be working on grapheneOS tv boxes in a years time.
I will 100% jump over to it if that does turn into a thing
HDMI + A presentation mouse and bluetooth keyboard on an old Pixel?
A totally valid option I had not considered. Imo, the solution needs to be controlled by a standard remote. I tried for a couple years to get my family to use a media pc that used a media keyboard and no one would touch it. I turned it into a server and streamed to emby and now they will use it but only after I showed them it works even when the internet is down.
I TOTALLY feel you. I’ve wanted a good media remote for ages. seems like a project to repurpose a bluetooth remote to control a phone would be medium low difficulty

I’m never buying another TV again. I got a 48" OLED computer monitor that is now my TV. And I don’t have to use that HDMI garbage.
“To use this vacuum cleaner you have to watch some ads.”
this is actually fucking terrifying

I have never connected a TV to the Internet. I do have a smart TV but I just use it for my computer.
Whats the benefit of using a smart tv for your computer?
50" 4k couch gaming
This is the way. Bonus with HDR, Dolby vision, Atmos.
Steam Deck looks and sounds awesome with this setup.
Better than a 50" 4k dumb tv?
Those are incredibly hard to find, if they even exist.
Hmm, fair enough didn’t think about that
It’s part of the reason TVs are so cheap today, they can serve you ads. You can technically find displays that don’t have ads, but they’re far more expensive. Better to just neuter a smart tv for personal use.
This is the answer. The computer is in the living room (Linux) and is used for games and movies and stuff. It’s hardened and the TV is just a dumb TV without Internet.
They do not exist. I looked.
Im still using an LG tv from 2007, and you could be too if you were my friend :^) I have jurassic park on bluray and i make pretty good popcorn
That’s one reason why I never connected mine to the internet.
Fucking Hell? Just allowed it to update an hourago and already had a bad feeling and now I am reading this?
We’re all going to be buying computer monitors to watch TV soon.
They’re becoming “smart” as well, unfortunately.
Genuine question, is there a downside to a HTPC?
I mean… good luck finding a 65 inch PC monitor.
That does seem like a bit of a downside.
The line between TV and PC Monitor is pretty thin. I’ve got my computer hooked up to my LG via HDMI and if there’s a difference between that and my office monitors, I can’t find it.
The difference is the LG TV has a computer already in it. Otherwise the panels are pretty similar.
But some types (and especially sizes) of panels are hard to find in “dumb” PC monitors and vice versa. You can (maybe) find a 42 inch TV, but I’m not aware of a 65 inch display without TV features, let alone any larger sizes.
I mean, 30-something is more than sufficient for my needs, and you can get monitors in that range.
Well, cool, then. It’s a genuine struggle to find a 32 inch TV of any decent quality these days.
But by far the most popular TV size today is 65 inch, which as far as I know isn’t available as a PC monitor at all, and even 32/40 inch PC monitors with a similar feature set can be as expensive or significantly more expensive than an equivalent-sized TV. That’s probably partially due to the focus on speed and responsiveness and partially due to the whole… you know, monetizing your data and selling ads thing.
Dang. I guess I’m more disconnected from the average consumer than I thought. My 48" has felt like plenty for even a good size living room for a while, and I’m used to 32" monitors and 7" phones, so it’s not like I prefer smaller screens. I had to go and fact check that 65" being the most popular. If you had asked me beforehand, I would have thought 55" was pushing it.
Yeah, that number went up pretty fast during the 2010s and 20s. Honestly, I think at this point it’s a cost/manufacturing reliability thing. There aren’t that many panel manufacturers, and these days a 65 inch OLED can be found for like a grand and a LED one for half of that. That’s sort of been “what a TV costs” for most of this century, so cheaper panels at scale in that price range probably means people go for the bigger one they can get in that price range unless they have some hard space limitations.
Storage management.
Stremio/Kodi exists though.
And projectors, many are still “dumb”
Why do I still have a 32" TV? Because that’s the largest size that’s still readily available as an ordinary, cheap, flat dumb panel with a tuner. (Well, that and I don’t especially need a larger one.)
Sceptre
i wish people were less tolerating about this shit. most likely users of those tvs will grumble a little at first and then just accept and eventually disparage anyone for speaking against it.
people should get way more angry about this publicly.
just think about how things used to be 50 or 100 years ago. Having a huge scandal could actually end someones career or put down a company. Now there is nothing shitty people and companies can’t do because everyone is so apathetic they wouldnt care if they themselves are the victim.
and when you do call it out, other consumers make fun of you and tell you you’re being annoying and to get with the times
see: LED headlights
Most people just dont care or notice. They go to work get money and then go to walmart snd buy whatever is cheapest. Theyre used to ads everywhere so they buy the ad infected tv and dont even notice anything wrong, ads are just a mundane fact of life.
Never buy Hisense, got it.
