I don’t see how the fact that it’s a Muslim majority city is headline-worthy. It reeks of stoking Islamophobic fearmongerng.

I think the important part is that it’s all speech on flagpoles. It’s not specifically pride flags like the title represents.

City councilmembers banned flags from all political, religious, and racial groups — but some felt the ban violates free speech rights.

      yep

i dont know about you, but I’m not exactly in the habit of asking the city put up a flag for me. Considering this ban passed in 2023 this feels like a nothingburger / distraction

Just ban everything but the city, state, and US flag if you’re going to ban things. Picking and choosing ends up discriminatory.

That’s exactly what they did, the headline just completely omits that information in favor of specifically focusing on pride flags being affected to get people angry and clicking.

I don’t even agree with the policy, but the headline is sensationalizing at best.

The lawsuit argued that the city council’s policy didn’t maintain neutrality because it allowed certain flags — like the U.S. and state flags, prisoner-of-war flags and flags that “represent the international character” of residents — while banning other types of flags – like political, religious, and racial flags.

If that claim is accurate it is a selective ban. Allowing only government flags on government flagpoles could be reasonable. But then they should still ban international flags, and if the POW flag is not a government thing that as well.

Just like the bible the islamic holy texts contain horrific anti lgbtq passages

Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) cursed those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners) of women and those women who are in the similitude (assume the manners) of men

Being generous here, but you could argue that this encourages people to transition, yes it enforces a binary, but it doesnt define man or woman

anyway religious people pick and choose passages to adhere to and ignore all the time, catholics eat pork, people worship icons and kill other people, its all bunk whatever

It’s Hamtramck, Wayne County, Michigan, USA, since the title is clickbaity. It’s just outside Detroit and the population is around 28,000.

It’s has a lot of immigrants settle there from Yemen, Bangladesh and Pakistan since the town had a financial crisis in the mid-2000s from factory closures. The council has typically had a Muslim majority in the past two decades.

As an out and proud gay man… I’m kinda with the city council on this one.

I’m curious what flags that “represent the international character” means, but otherwise it seems like they’re only allowing official government flags on government property and banning everything else. That seems fair.

Representation is nice, but I don’t need to see a pride flag hanging from every corner to feel seen. The only thing the government owes me is my civil rights, liberties, and basic human dignity. Slapping rainbows all over everything is just kinda performative lip-service, and is frankly cringy half the time.

Also, fuck the misleading clickbaity title of this article.
