Under the order, private businesses can choose to display signage indicating that ICE cannot enter without a warrant—thereby designating “their property as part of a city-wide network of community spaces that stand together in affirming the safety, dignity, and belonging of all of our residents,” the mayor said.

Johnson touted the order for building “a broad civic shield that limits the reach of harmful enforcement practices. It strengthens neighborhood solidarity and it reaffirms Chicago’s role as a welcoming city.”

The administration is TERRIFIED of its own citizens and they are doing anything they can do to suppress our rights and make us suffer.

At the same time, they are crashing the economy as fast as possible so we don’t have time to fight back and protest. The struggle is their favorite part.

Yeah… sometimes I feel like growing up with an abusive vindictive parent kinda prepared me for this. I wish I had something better to tell you, but the reality is they just suck and they shouldn’t be in control. They’re abusive. They’re vindictive. I’m sorry and you deserve better, but you’re stuck with them (for now). You’re not alone though. We’re all stuck with them (for now).

They get off on watching you struggle, but they also have tiny little egos that are easily bruised. Use that to your advantage. Take some comfort in the fact that narcissists are so blinded by their own egos, it usually means they can be outsmarted because underestimating everyone who isn’t them is their default mode. Their thinking is really rigid because they lack empathy and the ability to see things from any perspective other than their own. Often this results in them inadvertently but repeatedly shooting themselves in the foot while trying to assert their dominance. Try to laugh about it when it happens. Take care of yourself. Try to take care others. Stick together and remember you’re better than them.

Something that the current ICE activity brings to light is how lopsided government power has become in the US. The federal government has too much internal power and influence on US soil while state and local governments have too little.

Unless a state/local government is actively engaging in interstate crime against the wishes of their neighboring states the federal government shouldn’t have any authority to impose federal laws/rules on those states.

The power structure of this country was more bottom up when it came to government authority and state autonomy when we broke off from the UK, we should seriously get back to that in some respects.

The federal government has too much internal power and influence

It gets messy when the administration ignores the rule of law and owns the judiciary enough to make it legal.

I agree with the gist of that, but being born and raised in the deep south, I believe the federal government coming in to enforce civil rights was very necessary.

That is not what this is. This is literally the opposite, and its insane that they are seriously trying to make that comparison.

The federal government came in to desegregate public schools. They didn’t drop from helicopters on to the roof of private domiciles and send swat teams to kick down doors to arrest anybody opposed to desegregation.

The government is supposed to protect and defend the rights of every American, even if you disagree with them. That’s also why “DEI” exists, and I hate to break it to anyone who gets angry hearing “DEI” talk, but if you’re not named something like “Welslyian Trottersworth IV,” like it or not, you have most likely benefitted from “DEI practices,” at some point in your life.

He is held up to the consequences of his own actions. #4 is not having his rights taken away bc some poor kid wrote an essay and got a spot at a university doing science for the summer, and #4s family made too much money for him to qualify.

#4 still has the connections that make it possible to call up family friends and say #4 wants to work in a lab this summer, here are his hours make it happen, and definitely has the money to go to a science camp for an entire summer.

Professor O’Hara’s kid might also not qualify for that particular spot. Luckily he has his own connections, despite growing up poor, because professor O’Hara qualified for a similar spot as a kid and now he works at a university.

Some random kid like myself, who grew up poor white trash, with zero connections, but will become the first person in their family to graduate from college, yet have no idea how to navigate college when they get there, could really benefit from getting a spot like that.

I would have qualified, but I didn’t have that particular opportunity as a kid. Luckily there were other programs available that helped me navigate college once I got there. Thanks to those programs, I have also gotten to work with other kids who will also become the first in their family to graduate from college.

Those types of programs and practices are exactly where the majority of villainized DEI funding actually goes to. Funny that nobody seems to give a fuck about where that funding is now going instead, and who will benefit.

Don’t worry about #4 though, he’ll be just fine bc it turns out he happened to get a huge government contract to help build the new data center in town. Maybe someday my kids will have the privilege of toiling in one of his kid’s factories, and fighting their boss for the right to unionize. Just like in the good ole days (and like my own father tried and failed to do multiple times when I was growing up). Is that what progress is supposed to look like?

Seeing what is happening reminds me of Eisenhower seeing the concentration camps for the first time and immediately calling for the media to photograph everything and for members of congress to view the atrocities in person. He knew that there might come a day when the world wanted to pretend that it never happened and insisted that there be enough evidence that there was no way anyone could deny the holocaust.

It was the greatest act by a president (in my opinion) before he even became the president.

The lesson being, everyone in these cities need to be recording everything, so that when the blatantly criminal administration and its enablers are finally held to legal account (and they will), there can be no denying what they attempted to do in America in 2025.

        • I mean, problem is, its not a wikipedia that takes only 100GB, archive.org is in the TB and PB range.

If the funds can only sustain a max of 500 PB (for example), if you split that funding to 2 sites, you reduce it to 250 PB, if you want a EU site, a US site, and a Australia site, for example, you’re splitting the same pool of funds to just 166PB. I highly doubt people that usually donate $50 to one site is suddenly gonna find the money to donate $50 to each of the 3 sites, so the natural course of events is to split their donation to 3 sites.

(I mean, if you wanna make a personal backup copy to “decentralize” it, you can already do it yourself, just start downloading. I’m talking about a 100% clone of every bit of data, I don’t think individuals are gonna be able to maintain 500PB all by themselves and constantly check for data corruption)

To be fair, you definitively can decentralized parts of it using protocols such as torrents, which work great for that purpose. It ensures multiple locations having redundant data, a means of retrieving that data again, and constant checks for corruption

And actually come to think of this, this already does indeed happen, though only for a subset of the data. It’s much more tricky legally when it comes to copyrighted works.

If anyone has some spare terabytes of storage space, I do recommend you to see where you can contribute that space with torrents of this sort. It’s better to use that free space for good than just letting it sit idly by

Makes me think, however flawed the American democracy is, the federal set up does indeed hamper the attempts tyrannical consolidation. Diversity is not without issues, but having enough diversity allows deviation from enforced thoughts. So diversity is indeed a strength. This is what the MAGA wants to rid.

          No need.

Many (most?) policies already have an “act of government” clause that is specifically used to not pay out when police and feds destroy shit. Same with having carve outs for “military action”.

Also, funny enough, many policies actually have specific carve outs for damage due to “civil commotion” e.g. rioting. So there actually is a kernel of truth to “don’t destroy that mom and pop shop when you are rioting” because it probably will end that company (unless that is the point but…). But still fuck your Target and Kmart.

This only works if they are willing to enforce it. So they would need to get CPD on board with arresting ICE agents. And as much as I would love to see that happen, police tend to be the biggest bootlickers of them all.

It gives the populous more ‘room’ to intercede. Basically, a normal person at a cafe feels they have some permission structure to stand up to ice, after all, the governor and the mayor told them to. So they aren’t rebelling, they are helping uphold the law. I think things like this actually goes a long way in moving the general public. At the very least it doesn’t hurt

Donald Trump’s rapid-response White House X account decried the move. “This is SICK,” said the president’s team, accusing Johnson of “aiding and abetting criminal illegal immigrant killers, rapists, traffickers, and gang bangers.”

🙄 Oh lordy, I 100% support this, but I can already tell “ICE rights” are going to become the new cry of false victimhood (even moreso). Watch him turn this into a civil rights issue.

“You think you can refuse service the men and women who serve at my behest? Just because they might accidentally shoot a few people on purpose?”

“You think you can turn them away just because their presence makes people so uncomfortable, and it’s ruining your business? Because they’re a nuisance to all your other patrons, and everyone hates them?”

“I don’t give a rats ass if they’re still welcome as regular patrons like everyone else. Or that they just have to leave their tactical gear outside and not harass the other customers! They’re not like everyone else, they’re my special snowflakes! Those are their emotional support balaclavas and automatic rifles, and they need them at all times, you hateful bigot!”

Has Trump been seen recently even? I think that’s Miller posting on his account. You know the ‘real’ president. May as well be since Trump doesn’t do much and we all know Miller is a fascist dickhole. Spread the word, Miller is the one calling the shots.

Also many articles of Miller yelling about ICE quotas and crap if you look, so no wonder this would hit a nerve with that douche in charge that’s M-I-L-L-E-R, the Nazi wannabe (if you never saw it see the show he did with spray on hair, seriously that asshole tried it and went on tv just so you know how stunted he is). I bet Trump is great with his McDonalds, falling down stairs and strokes without having a real say in anything. I’m sure Trump loves knowing he has no real authority in the US beyond making their reputation shit. It’d really suck for him for everyone to learn him know he has less power than his South Park character.

Yeah, half of my family is from Southern Tennessee/West Virginia/South Ohio, the other half is from Eastern Canada and Northern Michigan, where I was born. (I mean, European, Jewish and First Nation but I just look white. Most of them, aside from those fleeing the holocaust, came over in the 1600s so its been long enough to become pretty mixed) I’m sure both sides had different reasons, but they had the same sentiment. This here land is yours, and nobody comes in unless you invite them. Neighbors all had that same agreement. That’s a bigger part of America than a lot of people know.

Started with immigrants, definitely moving towards targeting people in inner cities to test the waters, then based on that recent memo next is “Antifa” or anyone opposed to the Trump admin.

People still refusing to see this are in for a hell of surprise when they wake up to a swat team reading their suburban and rural homes, and find out wanting the Epstein files released means you’re also an official member of Antifa.

Haahaha to be honest, psychedelics and a near-death experience. All I know, is that whatever happens after death (which appears to be a lot, a lot more than what happens here) as long as I can keep my soul as clean as possible, the physical comings and goings of this place are very transient. Spreading love when I can brings it back and then I can share it again. The poorest people have nothing but money.

Prolly it’s a defense mechanism too because of how fucked things are, but I have felt and seen far too much love and beauty to allow myself to be defeated by the biggest losers on the planet. Fuck that, life rocks. They can eat shit, I’m gonna rave my way to the apocalypse if that’s where we’re goin. And if it doesn’t, we don’t need to wait that long for the end, so what’s the worry either way?

But the psychedelics and MDMa were the keys tbh, would have been harder to get there otherwise.

what happened to all the pre Rand Paul libertarians

I was one of them. I was in deep. I’ve met Ron Paul multiple times. I know some of his former staffers.

I will tell you what happened:

        • They were right that in fact the Government is spying on everyone, and bald-face lied about it (Clapper)
        • They then assumed that the Government can only lie, and that everything official is by definition untrue
        • A supermajority of them are religious faithful. They can be super educated but they still believe in Bronze-Age fairy stories and “personal Truth”
        • … which made them easy targets for Russian disinfo

It’s so banal. But it’s the truth. I know because I watched my former friends turn into people who intentionally spread COVID, to “show up the hoax”

I got older, developed more empathy but especially during these times, I have more and more found myself drawn to civil libertarianism. I don’t want an authoritarian government regardless of who’s in charge. The people (not corporations) are supposed to control the government, not be controlled by the government.

Government involvement in people’s personal lives should be minimized when possible, but the entire point of having a government is supposed to be to protect and serve the people. Except for some dumb fucking reason, we let the supreme court decide that corporations are people.

I think if we have any chance of surviving, we have to make overturning Citizens United a nonpartisan issue (which it should be and easily could be if all the propaganda and disinformation around it was removed).

T.L.D.R.:Government regulations should serve people and control corporations and technology, not the other way around. I do not buy that human focused (as in protections for the people, created by the people) regulations placed on corporations and technology are “inhibiting progress” any more than I would believe somebody telling me we need to start cutting brake lines in all vehicles bc they “inhibit speed.”

My grandfather was in the Navy during the 1940s. My uncle was in the FBI during the 1980s. My brother is in the National Guard in the 2020s.

        The times, they are a-changin’.

I ask myself what he would think of our political situation today.

There’s a joke about going back to 1789 and telling George Washington what has happened in the past 250 years.

And his first response is “Wait, you let a black guy become president?! That’s not what we fought for!”

His second response probably involves asking to see “Hot MILFs in your neighborhood”

I think that was Ben Franklin and not Washington. Ben was quite the lady chaser. He once had an exchange with a French woman who insulted him for being fat, she said ‘if a woman had a belly like yours, we’d all think she was pregnant!’ To which he replied, ‘this belly, madame, was on top of many fine ladies over here recently’.

        My grandfather lived long enough.

He always said “I killed the nazis once I can kill them again if I have too”

We had to pull him from the nursing home because he kept yelling at the younger trump supporters in there. He called them the “me generation. All they care about is me me me”

Amazing that demanding from the agencies to adhere to the rule of law makes some people really, really itchy.

You have it wrong, it’s actually ICE, a common acronym for “Internal Combustion Engine”. Chicago is trying to create more walkable spaces.
