The reality is that complacency is complicity. I would agree that LW mods don’t make up the instance rules, but if they are actively enforcing the rules instead of turning a blind eye then that is something that can be judged.

I find it interesting that this basically never happens. The security details of these guys basically never turn against them. Not just US guys but all the dictators and brutal warlords and such. And I get that it makes sense to be quite rare, but I genuinely know of zero instances of it.

This is the argument I get in with people in my life. Even my significant other is starting to fall into this trap that “they can’t hold up cabinet selection” due to some misguided notion that holding your nose and being respectful is necessary. It didn’t take me long to realize blocking that instance was a good idea. I didn’t know about lemmygrad and hexbear (which federated) until someone from lemmy.world pointed out another user was “brigading”, and looking up how lemmy.world eventually blocked that instance the feeling I have towards lemmy.world is that they act like the “world police” of the lemmy-verse.
