You need to start or register a business in the Netherlands (freelancing counts), maintain at least €4,500 in the business, and apply for a DAFT residence permit. The permit is initially granted for 2 years and can be renewed as long as you’re actively running the business. It’s one of the easiest ways for Americans to legally live in the Netherlands as a self-employed person.
