    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2026/06/30/joniah-walker-found-safe-disappearance/90757956007/

USA today article has some more details including that she sent texts to her therapist after she was last seen on a neighbors ring camera with a large backpack, and the messages “indicated she had run away”. Which certainly explains why the police didn’t consider her a priority (they almost never do if the person decided to leave consensually and there’s no evidence of coercion, or immediate danger).

There is nothing in the article about the conditions of her discovery nor any further detail about her disappearance.

      The Brief

Joniah Walker, a Milwaukee girl missing since 2022, has been found safe.
Now an adult, she was 15 years old when last seen near Buffum and Reservoir.
State Rep. Shelia Stubbs has pushed to create a Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls Task Force.

MILWAUKEE - Joniah Walker, a Milwaukee girl who had been missing since 2022, has been found safe roughly four years later, police confirmed.

      The backstory:

Surveillance video showed Walker walking near Buffum and Reservoir – a few blocks from where she lived with her mother – on June 23, 2022. Now an adult, Walker was 15 years old when she disappeared.

FOX6 News asked the Milwaukee Police Department when and where Walker was found. The department said she was found on May 25 but did not say where. Years-long investigation

      What they’re saying:

FOX6 News spoke to MPD Investigator Jamie Sromalla, who oversees missing persons cases, as part of a profile on Walker’s disappearance during Black History Month.

At that time, Walker was one of 36 long-term missing persons cases. Police said Walker was not classified as a critical missing person, a designation that can affect how resources are deployed.

Joniah Walker remains missing nearly four years after disappearing from Milwaukee at age 15, with her family still seeking answers.

Walker’s mother previously told FOX6 News she felt her daughter had been lured away by someone she met online. She deleted her digital footprint and never returned, until now. Legislative push

      Big picture view:

Since 2021, State Rep. Shelia Stubbs has been pushing to pass a bill to create the Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls Task Force. Walker, along with Sade Robinson and LaSheaky Hill, were the faces of that effort’s latest push last summer.

“I would cry, I would hug her, I would tell her prayer works because we were praying,” Stubbs said when she learned of the news Tuesday. “I believed Joniah was still living, and I said that to her – I don’t believe Joniah is dead, it’s only a matter of time.”

The task force would be made up of police, survivors, attorneys, and victims’ rights experts. It would look into what leads to violence against these people, and the task force would have to give recommendations on how to stop it. The Wisconsin State Assembly passed Stubbs’ bill in 2024, but it stalled in the Senate. If reelected, she plans to introduce the legislation for a fourth time.

“I think right now, the family needs their privacy,” Stubbs said. “I know there are so many questions, but I think as time goes by when they are ready to tell their story, they will tell it.”

      By the numbers:

Last summer, signs displayed inside the Wisconsin Capitol shed light on alarming statistics from The Guardian: Wisconsin ranked No. 1 in the nation for the highest rate of homicide among Black women and girls in 2020. Columbia researchers found Black women in Wisconsin between 2019 and 2020 were 20 times more likely to be murdered than white women. The researchers said that was the worst disparity in the country.

It looks like straightforward, though low-effort, local news reporting. Fox owns a lot of local news stations, and while this creates an obvious conflict of interest, a lot of them continue operating more or less independently in their normal reporting.

Eh, you never know. Could have easily been an abusive home life where this disappearance was her escape. Could also have been a “ran away with an older boyfriend” thing, and they ended up breaking up this summer.

That honestly seems the most likely give me a lack of information about arrests or needed medical attention.

She was 15 when she disappeared, not 5. That’s definitely old enough to actually make an informed decision to leave. If her home life was bad, not wanting anything to do with returning and actively avoiding any sort of situation that could result in that. It is entirely possible that running away from home was in fact the best option for her.

Usually that means they didn’t want to be found. A rescue story usually says someone was arrested and they are reuniting the person with their family. They don’t mention any of that in this story.

That tracks, if it was a kidnapping/sex trafficking it would have been mentioned as that makes headlines.
