    As I’ve regretfully been taught many times in recent years, a lot of my fellow Americans ostensibly believe that “fascism” means “when the government does something I don’t like” and “liberty” means “when the government does something I like.”

    Ergo if the government centralizes power, oppresses minorities, etc. it’s not fascism because they like it. But if the government helps poor people or forces them to endure minor inconveniences to prevent the spread of disease, that’s fascism because they don’t like it.
