Protest against the Omarchy/Omacom Foundation and the tech companies and executives funding far-right open source.
I am locking the thread only because the comment sections has turn out to be full of toxicity. I am reserving my opinions, but seldom bans will be issued for those who defend far-right, support lies, and lacks basic ethics and/ or human empathy. Feel free to reach out via the report button. Do not use it to defend yourself from “insults” when people disagree with you.
With all the options aroud, I really don’t see the point to even try it.
Why are you morons trying to make me try Omarchy? I wouldn’t really care about that distro without all the idiotic whining.
DHH is calling you clowns. Good job proving his point.
If you’re reading dhh’s blog, then you already know what he’s about. Which makes you a complicit jackass. Shoo.
*David Attenborough voice* And here we see a contrarian in the wild, see how they mimic the patterns of a fascist, but hold no views of their own? Fascinating
It is as if they believe they can look more intellectual and interesting than they really are, a weak facade that everyone can see through.
They will not last the winter.
We just dont like Nazi’s. I know… weird take…
Calling them nazis proves his point. You are being clowns.
But. They are? By their own speech. I’m now guessing you are too?
It’s so weird when you find someone who gleefully repeats all the slogans, and claims to believe all the hateful rhetoric, yet gets their panties all in a bunch when you call them the word.
Why would you be ashamed? Just own it you little Nazi bitches.
Exactly, like, why are they mad I keep calling them nazi’s when they clearly keep doing and saying and believing nazi stuff?
Well then own it and make your grandfather sad and ashamed (As most likely he was actually anti-nazi and anti-fascist.)
If calling a Nazi a Nazi makes me a clown, then hand me the fucking makeup
Yeah that is sooooo goood!
The sign of a fully formed adult human:
being “forced” to do a thing simply because people on a website don’t like the thing (also who actually cares why they don’t like it? Having values is for losers)
So nobody who make things cannot have an opinion anymore? Grow up.
Are you suggesting that people shouldn’t have opinions about others, just because they make things? Grow up.
I can’t imagine someone hearing racist beliefs and then defending them as just opinions someone can have. Like that’s fuckin crazy. Corporate media has done such a number on people they can’t even recognize the swastika on their fuckin arm.
Corporate media has done such a number on people they can’t even recognize the swastika on their fuckin arm.
What? Do you even speak English?
As someone who was vaguely aware of omarchy and an arch user already, I had no interest in using it. I am happy to see more people talking about why it could be controversial. It helps counter the propaganda being pushed by the influencers right now. Sunlight is the best disinfectant.
“How dare people I don’t like give away software”
This hyperbolic inflation of ad hominem “fascist” labeling just makes the word lose its meaning, and makes people lose their respect/belief in what you’re saying. If you want to have a rational discussion using critical thinking, attack the argument not the person. Define words before using them. Tell us what “fascist” means to you, and why you think it applies in this context. Then listen to what people say and try to understand their perspective before writing them off as some kind of lost cause.
If instead you’re not interested in a debate, you’ve already made up your mind and believe there can be no other valid perspectives, well, then maybe you weren’t looking for truth OR intelligence in the first place. As a rule, strong feelings about issues do not emerge from deep understanding.
And we all know that if the far-right people are excluded, they’ll just make a better Linux community elsewhere.
Lol, no they won’t.
They are people, and they do have every right to live there lives, but not consequence free. Racists, bigots, etc all deserve the hate they get. By using products they create and profit from, the user is helping find that person’s beliefs and actions. I for one gladly will not use their products. The little bit of extra work keeping mental tabs on those products or companies and doing my best to avoid them is far better than supporting them in any way. I don’t always avoid them and in some cases it’s not feasibly possible, but I can try.
Every battery and piece of electronics on planet Earth is made from raw materials sourced from child and forced labor all over the world.
Nobody has any room to even attempt to argue that lamenting the loss of your cultural identity is somehow fascist.
Like I said, I try to avoid things when it’s feasible. Cutting electronica out isn’t feasible.
Here are the core principles of fascism. Republicans check all of the boxes. That’s why we call them fascists. It’s not just a knee jerk title to draw shock it’s a fitting title based on their actions. Feel free to try and dispute any of that.
Core Characteristics of Fascism.
- Powerful and Continuing Nationalism: Regimes constantly use patriotic mottos, symbols, and songs, whipping up fear of external threats to unify the populace.
- Disdain for Human Rights: Basic civil liberties are ignored or suspended under the guise of national security and public safety.
- Scapegoating and Identifying Enemies: Popular discontent is redirected toward a common enemy—often minority groups, immigrants, or political dissidents—blamed for the nation’s problems.
- Supremacy of the Military: A disproportionate amount of national resources goes toward military funding and glorifying armed forces, viewing peace as weakness.
- Controlled Mass Media: Independent news outlets are either directly censored, state-run, or intimidated into compliance through propaganda.
- Obsession with National Security: Fear is utilized as a primary motivational tool by the government to keep citizens hyper-vigilant and compliant.
- Intertwining Religion and Government: Ruling parties frequently leverage dominant religious identities to shape public policy and project moral superiority.
- Protection of Corporate Power: While populist rhetoric targets the “everyman,” actual economic policy typically preserves and collaborates with wealthy corporate monopolies.
- Suppression of Labor Power: Independent labor unions are outlawed or heavily restricted because they threaten state and corporate synchronization.
- Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts: Free expression, academia, and critical thought are viewed with intense suspicion and suppressed if they challenge state narratives.
- Obsession with Crime and Punishment: Police powers are expanded, and local laws are enforced with extreme, unchecked authority.
- Rampant Cronyism and Corruption: Friends and loyal associates of the regime are appointed to powerful positions, looting state resources without legal consequence.
- Fraudulent Elections: Democratic processes are manipulated, rigged, or completely abolished to maintain the ruling party’s absolute grip on power.
crickets
Sure, MAGA republicans are fascists. I don’t think that needs to be disputed.
Still a bit hazy how DHH and silly little project relates to all this.
Then go read DHH’s blog before you defend a guy with Nazi beliefs dude. Are you seriously responding everywhere in this thread and you’re happy to call MAGA fascists but not DHH?! He’s talking about the exact same political hate speech. “Migrants are bad, we need a strong leader, free speech is dying (but actually my only examples are racists and homophobes getting arrested for disturbing the peace)(explicitly not the Palestine speech arrests)” like not a single word about the ultra rich destroying his country and culture. Not a single word about valuing people who don’t look like him. Not a single positive thing that would tell someone “oh this isn’t a boilerplate nazi”. He is nationalist, he is racist, he is afraid, and he is too stupid to point to the source of the problem that every country in the world is facing right now.
And you’re defending him. A guy with nazi beliefs. Online, where everyone can write a note next to your username and go “defends Nazi’s”. And you’re saying you haven’t even read his blog?!
m. Tell us what “fascist” means to you, and why you think it applies in this context.
DHH—creator of Ruby on Rails, CTO at 37signals, and Shopify board member—has published white-nationalist essays. He called a Tommy Robinson “remigration” march “heartwarming,”[1][2][3][46] and wrote another comparing Roma people to wolves to be shot and deported.[4][5] Anthropic’s own model refused to translate it, calling it dehumanizing.[6]
wrote another comparing Roma people to wolves to be shot and deported
I still don’t see a definition of fascist, only baseless accusations with the worst possible interpretations of their posts.
a populist political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti)** that exalts nation and often race above the individual**, that is associated with a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, and that is characterized by severe economic and social regimentation and by** forcible suppression of opposition**
From DHH’s blog:
Because as the number of wolves has been rising sharply every year since 2021, so too has the number of dead sheep. In 2021, it was 78, then in the years that followed, it was 162, 336, 521, and last year, it was 1,285! But the official line is still that shooting a wolf without a special permit is strictly prohibited because they’re an endangered species, so maybe sheep herders could just try some more fences?
You don’t have to be a statistician to see the problem here. When you have a surging wolf population, you’ll have the rate of dead sheep following suit. If the only answer to the situation is “maybe try some more fences?”, you’re going to get more of what you already have: an out-of-control population that’s an increasing risk to sheep, livestock, and potentially humans too.
This is the most basic consequence of inaction in the face of a growing threat: the problem just gets worse.
Cue the gypsies in Copenhagen, and their increasingly brazen behavior, after the city legalized overnight sleeping in parks and other green areas last year. Because “it shouldn’t be illegal to be homeless”, so the police refuses to act.
This has predictably led to these foreign vagrants setting up camp in the green areas around some of the city’s metro stations to the great dismay of neighbors. The vagrants are literally shitting in the bushes, which obviously stinks, and the area isn’t made any more inviting by the open-fire cooking that’s also going on.
Please tell me what the charitable interpretation of this is, and how it is not leaning towards “remove the foreign animals by force before they destroy our beautiful white culture”
He did not call for them to be shot, he expressed that he would like to deport homeless vagrants who were not Danish citizens. If vagrancy is a crime, then deporting a criminal is not a controversial stance. It is, in fact, standard operating procedure for any nation-state in the world that can afford to do so.
If you think “follow the law” is the part of his argument that I take issue with, you are being purposefully obtuse.
The standing definition in left-of-center bubbles seems to be “people who have said a thing somebody with social media influence didn’t like”. Funny how these things flip, when I was young it used to be the crazy right-wing christians who did that, and leftists and anarchists were the voice of sanity.
What’s the correct interpretation, then? Say it already, coward!
fascism n 1: a political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism)Please point to where they are advocating for an authoritarian government.
Hint: It’s not in the posts “As I remember London” or “Wolves, sheep, and gypsies”.
That doesn’t sound fair does it? That’s exactly what people are doing by making these claims without critical thinking and having their minds already made up.
“No one has provided me with a definition of fascism! I’ll provide my own!”
[removes everything from the definition except advocacy of authoritarian governments]
“See guys! YOU where wrong!”
Even with the stripped out version of the definition, that still clearly defines the current Republican regime. It’s a self own if I’ve ever seen one.
DHH explicitly calls for a strong leader and that they must be followed. I read ONE of his blog posts to verify he’s what everyone is saying he is, and ya in plain English he was parroting the same racist, racist, authoritarian bullshit every sad loser who refuses to go to therapy is spouting. Literally break bread with a black person, get offline and read a book written by a famous dead marginalized person (like Frankenstein or something it’s not hard to find an applicable and enjoyable book), and realize poor immigrants can’t afford the housing in London and then think about why housing everyone is getting more expensive AND the world has a trillionaire.
It’s really not very hard to draw the correct connections vs the wrong one.
Everywhere I look in these threads I see accusations of “far-right”, “racist”, “Nazi”, “fascist”, etc, coming from people who seem to me to be in support of equally extremist views such as communism, sexual sterilization of minors, unchecked mass migration, and other objectively destructive social, political and economic views. You’re all standing in glass houses lobbing stones without the slightest bit of self-awareness of the sheer hypocrisy involved.
Not all of us who work in tech are so thoroughly indoctrinated with far left ideology that we can’t see the reality on the ground in our own homelands and develop an informed opinion on it. The bottom line is, whatever projects you’re involved with could just as easily become the target of this same kind of purity test that you’re all trying to enforce. There’s not much stopping any given software project from being forked and taken over by new management once enough people get sick of the ideologues who’ve positioned themselves as self-proclaimed moral gatekeepers.
Meanwhile the beauty of FLOSS in itself is that it is (at least was until fairly recently) effectively borderless, allowing people from vastly different cultures, backgrounds and political affiliations, to all collaborate on producing great products made freely available to everyone. By it’s nature it transcends and transgresses all these artificial boundaries and flies in the face of the politics we’re always told should divide us as human beings. It’s well past time everyone spits out their respective koolaid and is reminded of that fact. FLOSS is a bridge which brings us together and helps us overcome our differences through shared labors of love. Those who try to inject division and discord into that ethos have no rightful place among us.
sexual sterilization of minors Either I’m missing something or you’re regurgitating transphobic conspiracy theories
You’re a huge dumbass who fell for so much propaganda that it’s almost impossible to even begin to argue with any of this because there are so many bad faith points and false equivalences here.
Just from your opening statement, I see “communism” as an “extreme viewpoint” (it’s not), “sexual sterilization of minors” which is a transphobic dog whistle (no one is sterilizing children), “unchecked mass migration” which is MAGA racist dog-whistle bullshit for “I think only white people should be allowed in rich countries” (no one is opening borders and eschewing immigration law, not even Obama or Biden), “and other objectively destructive” as if your opinion is pure objectivity (delusional) and destructive? Destructive of what, oppressive norms that serve only to entrench power structures while removing freedoms from people who would just like to live their lives?
“The bottom line is, whatever projects you’re involved with could just as easily become the target of this same kind of purity test that you’re all trying to enforce.” - yeah, if they start publishing Nazi-inspired blog posts dehumanizing people and praising authoritarian repressive figures, start raising tons of capital with the hopes of cashing in on their creation: Why the fuck WOULD we support making those assholes rich? It’s not about the software dumbass, it’s about not funding toxic and oppressive figures.
“unchecked mass migration”
I have actually seen a few lemmy comments implying that anybody should be able to walk into countries like the US or Spain and become citizens.
if the US can enter the middle east at their own will and bomb the civilians there then yes those same people should be allowed to enter the US for free. You want powers but not the consequences?
I can see how from the perspective you’re coming from this looks like a “both sides are crazy” situation. But you’re description of the “far left” looks to me like the strawman propaganda you see from some right wing channels. And I get a sense you might not have dug into the points in the linked website.
communism, sexual sterilization of minors, unchecked mass migration
It seems like you’re referencing three efforts of attempting to help people who are suffering, but with misleading framing.
communism
Some on the left (including me) are pushing democratic socialism, which is not like the undemocratic Marxist-Leninist communism. From your framing I’d guess you think that “socialism” means no money or private enterprise. But that’s not necessarily true. The distinction between capitalism and socialism is specifically whether there is a class of people (capitalists) whose role is to own large portions of industry. Rather like how there used to be a class of nobility whose role was to rule, and people assumed it couldn’t work any other way. My understanding is democratic socialists are largely pushing for “market socialism” where there is money and private enterprise, but private companies are owned by their workers. For example AOC has made this case. If you think this idea is “objectively destructive” despite the opinion of others who disagree I think maybe you haven’t given the viewpoint a fair analysis. It’s easy to think of the status quo of modern capitalism as the only way, but modern capitalism has only existed for a couple of centuries, and has mutated substantially in that time.
sexual sterilization of minors
This frames bottom surgery as widespread at young ages, which is not true. It also glosses over the suffering that results when gender dysphoria is met with intolerance. Please don’t take at face value the strawman claim that gender-affirming care is “sterilization”. I’ll link to the Physicians for Reproductive Health gender-affirming care factsheet. FWIW people on the left interpret right-wing pushback on trans rights as bullying children, and can’t comprehend why people would do that.
unchecked mass migration
If this references opposition to Trump’s mass-deportation policy, there are important details you should be aware of. There a few problems. One is brutal treatment for what is legally a misdemeanor offense. (If you accumulated a big pile of speeding tickets, do think it would be fair to potentially permanently separate you from your children?) In response the government has deported people to countries they have never been to, including to a very unsafe war zone in South Sudan, and to indefinite imprisonment in CECOT in El Salvador. Many more have been held for who knows how long in thrown-together domestic concentration camps and over-crowded prisons with atrocious conditions. Another problem is doing the same to people who are following the rules. Did you know that ICE has staked out courthouses so they can arrest people at their own immigration hearings? Please try to remember that these are human people, some of whom have fled terrible conditions in their home countries, and who might have nowhere else to go.
The “both sides” take also glosses over the harm that the Omarchy boycott calls out. When people advocate killing off ethnic groups (as DHH has done according to the points in the linked website), that does sometimes lead to killing people of those ethnic groups.
He has never advocated for killing anyone, that is a gross misinterpretation of words.
I could have looked more closely at the original Romani post. DHH argued that ranchers have a right to eliminate wolves by shooting them as an analogy for an argument to get rid of Romani. (Or as he calls them, “gypsies”). He’s a little vague about what he wants to be done to the Romani. But it looks like he identified an ethnic group, and described that group as a “problem”. The comparison to wolves implies he thinks there is something irredeemably problematic with the ethnic group. The analogy with eliminating wolves implies he thinks the ethnic group should be made to go away, somehow. There is no non-violent way to do that.
Edit: I think my words weren’t pointed enough. Romani are a vulnerable group who have been targeted for extermination in the past. The wolf analogy has clearly violent implications. Eliminating or removing or forcibly assimilating an ethnic group is inherently violent. DHH’s post is genocide talk.
Y’know what? You’re right. What builds a strong FLOSS project is a community of open-minded people ready to look over some differences to focus on what matters. I don’t care if you, say, hate communism, or pineapple on pizza, if we can work alongside each other building what aligns with both of us.
The problem is, the latest political turn has people turning against each other, breaking that promise. Hyprland community allows open mocking of trans people. DHH openly calls for the deportation of migrants, some of which are also FLOSS contributors who may lose their livelihood and with it, an ability to participate. The list goes on, and this is what the stir is really about.
No one cares if it’s some views you hold in the vacuum. But these views convert to policies that end up alienating vital parts of the community, and, diverse as FLOSS community is, you’re practically guaranteed to splinter it if you go this route.
For decades, FLOSS came from the place of accepting people as they are. Now this promise is broken, and here we mock and avoid people who made this happen. It is not a purity test, it is a practical way to stand for the community and people that represent it through these turbulent times. The people we end up calling fascist are those who get actively hostile to large groups of people, some of which are inevitably part of what makes the whole FLOSS movement roll. We should never, ever associate with people who murder the promise and foundation FLOSS is built on. DHH and others on the list are among them.
Hyprland community allows open mocking of trans people.
That would be a problem if trans people would be forced to be in the Hyprland community. Are they?
DHH openly calls for the deportation of migrants, some of which are also FLOSS contributors who may lose their livelihood and with it, an ability to participate.
Does he actually call for deportation of anyone who works? That seems to be the constant confusion about what the anti-immigration people are talking about.
That would be a problem if trans people would be forced to be in the Hyprland community.
Then, by extending the same treatment, the civilized world retains full right and reason to exclude and mock those who have no respect for the people they work with.
In any case, what is being done here is divisive and harmful for the FLOSS community. It creates a new separation of people based on ideological grounds, so instead of working together, they’ll be forced to fork the projects or work on something else not out of technical limitations, but out of, simply, worldview. This means less contributors, more drama, endless infighting and all the other things FLOSS traditionally stood above. This is bad for all of us.
You may think all you want, but without proper boundaries set to protect all of the contributors, we won’t go anywhere.
Does he actually call for deportation of anyone who works?
He complained on several occasions about the inflow of foreigners in Denmark and made false claims about migrant criminality while calling for the restoration of Danish national identity by maintaining foreign population controls. This is where it started and it kept developing from there. As per work, instead of suggesting better avenues for work offerings, he suggested going hardline, banning homelessness (as if people do it by choice) and suggesting mass deportations, comparing “gypsies” to “wolves to be shot before they eat the sheep”. Doesn’t look good at all.
That would be a problem if trans people would be forced to be in the Hyprland community. Are they?
This same argument could be made against any other minority (or majority) group: Jews, Muslims, women, disabled people, and so on. None of them are forced into the community either. Surely it wouldn’t be a problem if they could be openly mocked for those qualities, right?
An exclusive community is about as far from “open” as it gets.
This same argument could be made against any other minority (or majority) group: Jews, Muslims, women, disabled people, and so on. None of them are forced into the community either. Surely it wouldn’t be a problem if they could be openly mocked for those qualities, right?
I personally don’t think it’s a good idea to alienate any of those groups, including trans people. Banning assholes is a great idea though, regardless of what their identity group is.
But I don’t think I have any right to tell a project what they find acceptable or not. Like I said, it’s not like everybody has to participate, and there are plenty of projects with different rules and vibes.
But I don’t think I have any right to tell a project what they find acceptable or not. Like I said, it’s not like everybody has to participate, and there are plenty of projects with different rules and vibes.
This is true. If they want to be assholes on their own, then whatever.
It should come as no surprise then, and to no controversy, that we should be allowed to advocate against them in our spaces.
If that’s the kind of people you see all around you, then you’re hanging out in some extremely questionable places that the rest of us aren’t. Where are you hanging out with people who have strong opinions on sexual sterilization of minors or equivalent? What kinds of weird shit are you into?
Not all of us who work in tech are so thoroughly indoctrinated with far left ideology that we can’t see the reality on the ground in our own homelands and develop an informed opinion on it.
All of us who work in tech are more than familiar with our weird alt right coworkers who think their constant guzzling of FOX News and OANN type propaganda is “information”. You’re not special, except as gossip fodder.
Where are you hanging out with people who have strong opinions on sexual sterilization of minors or equivalent?
I believe he’s referring to corrective surgeries and gender blockers for gender dysphoric people. Surgeries are not done to minors anywhere probably, but puberty blockers are obviously administered to minors. Studies show that puberty blockers very often are followed up with cross-sex hormones, which do cause sterilization for natal males especially.
As someone married to a trans man who has been on HRT long enough to pass in rural southern US, I can tell you from firsthand experience that we still are advised to wear protection.
Because, you know, he’s not sterile. (He wishes he was, though.)
Bottom surgery does sterilize for obvious reasons, but like you said, it’s not a surgery often given to children.
There are many medications with dangerous long-term risks associated with them. Among them is birth control, for example.
Unlike birth control, people take HRT being fully informed what effects are associated with the process. It isn’t administered without acknowledgement of that information. It isn’t given unless you are deemed confident in your decision by mental health professionals. And even then, in many places, it often takes years to begin the process.
The “sterilization” argument is a weak one made to alienate and fearmonger. People who truly have gender dysphoria and truly wish to resolve that issue through transitioning would, for the most part, love to be sterile. The thought of using what they were born with in that manner, usually, is horrifying and disgusting beyond belief.
Anyway, I know you’re not the one making that argument. Just sharing my experiences being around it since it’s relevant.
Oh so he’s basically operating purely on alt right propaganda.
It’s a bit dangerous to allow radical fringe groups to seize facts as their own propaganda.
Omarchy who?
Dont waste your time on this man, just a bunch a SJWs complaining again.
Lmao eat shit chud.
Reading The Omarchy Doctrine made me physically cringe. That alone is a good argument to boycott Omarchy.
It’s wild how much it just sounds like a heritage foundation list but with “nerds” slapped to the front
Wouldn’t surprise me if they’re behind this somehow.
Or some of their creatures at least
Amazing how much shit an unremarkable pseudo distro can stir up. Deservedly. Techbros like DHH are a cancer.
I don’t give a shit about DHH or Omarchy.
The sad part and why it sucks so much is because instead of feeding people we just gave $18m to a fascist to babysit some shitty post install scripts…
Reality is stranger than fiction.
Edit. FUCK every org associated with Omarchy. I’ll never give them a fucking dime.
Switch to windows
I honestly don’t see why any of this should stop someone from using the software.
It’s open source. If you don’t like DHH, his politics, or the people funding Omarchy, then don’t give them money. Don’t donate, don’t sponsor them, don’t contribute upstream.
But the code is out there under the MIT license. Anyone can use it, change it, remove whatever they don’t like, or fork the whole thing.
Using a piece of open-source software doesn’t mean you endorse the politics of whoever wrote it. If that were the standard, we’d probably have to audit the personal beliefs of thousands of developers before installing anything.
And if people really think Omarchy has become some political project, then fork it. Change the branding, change the maintainers, change whatever you want. That’s literally one of the reasons open source is useful.
Boycotting companies you don’t want to financially support is one thing. Treating open-source code itself as politically contaminated is another, and I don’t think that makes much sense.
You got it!
Found a fucking Nazi sympathizer aka Nazi.
Voicing again my agreement, all of this energy going against DHH could be put into a fork and that would be way more powerful and effective of a move.
It’s got kind of a tai chi element - move in the direction of the vector don’t try to go against it. It’s popular for a reason, and you don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water. There are many things today that you could hyperfocus on the evil aspect of that people still use in their daily lives because it brings them utility.
I used Omarchy and it inspired me to make a NixOS version of it that I called Omnixient :) Thanks to the open-source nature I now have my own awesome config that has brought me a lot of fulfillment and productivity I did not have before.
Publish it.
Again the software and its functionality are not the problem, I just don’t want to support a jackass and his shit takes about dehumanizing people and passing the buck on problems society created.
While he takes on million of dollars for a project that is not an innovator in the space.
but I’m honestly curious, what is this movement against him going to accomplish? I do not know this DHH character nor do I care to listen to anything he says. If he’s as bad as all of these accusations make him out to be then he’s someone who’s just going to write off all of this and/or it’ll fuel him.
I’m genuinely curious, what is the real value or impact of this crusade versus putting that energy toward something constructive? While everyone here is writing about fascism, him and capitalism will keep developing.
It’s just all sounds like terribly futile tactics…
I had originally linked it, but damn! to be honest i want to have nothing to do with whatever is going on here and I’m just going to keep building stuff toward open-source decentralized future using whatever tools I have at my disposal to close the distance. I’m no trained software developer (learned C++ and python from mech engineering & physics) that can reliably maintain a repo people might depend on and this just seems like people flinging shit around. Noooo thank you
More awareness could mean less money going directly to Nazis
A fork of what? We already have countless forks of Arch. My understanding is that this one itself doesn’t even change enough to meet the definition of “fork”.
Using it gives it legitimacy.
It is a bit worrying and reminiscent of an old Microsoft strategy
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace%2C_extend%2C_and_extinguish
Do you think just ignoring a festering fascist presence that is getting tons of funding in a community that regularly has money problems will lead to it just going away?
It’s the same as hanging up a picture painted by Hitler.
You just don’t unless you are a Nazi.
That’s just guilt by association with a Hitler comparison thrown in.
Brendan Eich created JavaScript and donated to the campaign against same-sex marriage in California. Does using JavaScript mean you endorse that too?
Of course not. Using someone’s work isn’t an endorsement of their politics.
JavaScript is not a standalone product produced by a single company who’s leader is blogging about how “foreign vagrants should be sent back to where they came from”, my use of a web browser does not directly enrich Brendan Eich.
Found the bootlicking nazi everybody
The bigger the userbase, the easier time DHH has getting new funding.
Your points are correct. If they were about an irreplaceable library where there were only one or two options then yeah that’d be fine.
But there aren’t. This is a Linux “distro” with a thousand other options. It’s literally just a Linux distro with a few dot files added. There’s zero reason to ever use this distro.
That still doesn’t really address my point.
Whether there are two alternatives or two thousand doesn’t change what using the software means. If someone prefers Omarchy’s defaults, setup or workflow, that’s enough of a reason to use it.
And if it’s really “just Linux with a few dotfiles added”, that makes the idea that using it is some meaningful political endorsement even harder to take seriously.
If someone prefers Omarchy’s defaults, setup or workflow, that’s enough of a reason to use it.
And if I find out they’re a Nazi, that’s enough reason not to. And in this case there’s so little friction and it’s so simple to not use it, that it’s a no brainer.
If I can avoid supporting a Nazi this easily, without altering a single noticeable thing about my life, it would be irresponsible not to.
Do you understand now?
There is a level of friction associated with changing anything like this for ideological reasons, and everyone has to have their own ways of deciding which ones are worth pushing against, according to them.
“Avoid the Nazi that puts out a slightly modified version of Arch,” is just a no brainer. It takes no effort or energy whatsoever to avoid having that in your life.
To frame it better:
Let’s say I cloned arch, changed the default wallpaper to a swastika, put up a blogpost saying “Heil hitler”, and then suddenly got over 50X donations than an actually useful and different OS.
Since last year, Linux mint got $280k donations. Omarchy in the last few months got 15 MILLION. Linux mint maintains 2 distros, and 1 desktop environment, and is basically the gold standard for newbie friendly distros. Omarchy is a few dotfiles and a pile of nazis.
Let’s say I cloned arch, changed the default wallpaper to a swastika, put up a blogpost saying “Heil hitler”, and then suddenly got over 50X donations than an actually useful and different OS.
And this fascinating thought experiment relates to Omarchy how?
It relates because you didn’t read anything in the thread and are a bad actor.
Don’t forget Hyprland which is apparently even more problematic
hyprland is problematic?
From what I remember;
Someone in the hyprland discord kept getting misgendered so they put their pronouns in their profile. At some point a mod then changed them to who/cares.
When this came to Vaxry’s attention he said something to the affect of “I don’t care, sort it out yourselves”.
Someone from redhat then either complained or was a member of the freedesktop CoC and he got banned.
Now freedesktop is in an awkward position of one of the biggest wayland DE’s no longer being allowed to contribute to the Wayland spec.
To me it’s more that a tolerant society should not tolerate people or projects that have this kind of intolerance to others.
Because, if we do, we lose our democracy.
And if people really think Omarchy has become some political project, then fork it.
There’s literally nothing to fork. From what I understand, it in and of itself, isn’t even distinct enough from Arch to be considered a fork.
And how about we stop discouraging people from standing by their values?
Golly gee, there just aren’t enough Linux distros to choose from. I just have to go with the one by the worst people imaginable. What other choice do I have?
I use Fedora. I obviously don’t “have to” use Omarchy.
But the existence of alternatives has nothing to do with whether using a piece of software means endorsing its author. Otherwise software selection just becomes an ideological loyalty test.

Fuuuuuck…
Am I blind? I don’t see those people mentioned in the article anywhere
Louis Rossmann
Wait what?!
There’s three points next to his name:
- “Worked with” someone who has some links to right side politics to get funding for a right to repair non profit.
- Unless there’s more info somewhere, I don’t see this being overly bad since he’s all about trying to change laws for the better, and just by virtue of doing that you will need to at least interact with the slimy part of politics.
- Anti-trans:
which can be paraphrased as “I think transgender women are men but I’m willing to overlook it if we have common cause”- So identity denying. This looks more like he doesn’t have enough information than a case of far right conspiracy trans are pedos shit. Seeing how he’s changed his mind about things in the past when presented with new information, and knowing how deep he goes into rabbit holes (especially when it comes to rights) when he finds them, I see this as unfortunate, but potentially redeemable.
Louis has been a regular poster on the hate and harassment website Kiwi Farms, posting there from 2023 to the present under the username “larossmann”.- I don’t have enough information on this to have a proper opinion. This looks like something that warrants further investigation…
Thanks for being a voice of sanity. While I don’t care for defending celebrities on the internet, I also don’t care for purity testing, and since I have been a booster of his work and ideas on occasion, wanted to do a bit of due diligence and had largely come to the same “smoke but no actual fire” conclusion
On that last point, I was really curious so I suited up and checked it out: https://kiwifarms.st/search/39060321/?t=post&c[content]=post&c[users]=larossmann&o=date
He has only posted on exactly one thread, funnily enough about him (but not started by him) and all of the comments I read have been talking about various bits of content, but I did not see anything that I would consider out-of-character or promoting hate in my opinion.
Is this a good look? Not great for sure, since Kiwi Farms is definitely an edgelord paradise. But oddly enough, its at least consistent with his ethos, since he always talks about being bipartisan.
In my point of view this is a witch-hunt, i dont know many of the names. I checked some people on the list and the allegations, make your own research - i dont take this list of „clean foss and the it-scene from this people“ serious.
- “Worked with” someone who has some links to right side politics to get funding for a right to repair non profit.
I’ve Omarchy installed in one of my laptops & I’m going to keep using it. If you have a problem with politics, you shouldn’t be using iPhones for similar reasons. Steve jobs was worse & he drove people to delete themselves.
As long as you have nothing to say about Apple/boycott Apple, I’m disregarding your takes on Omarchy.

So your stance is that as long as there’s anyone in the world not speaking out against everything made by immoral people, you can use whatever you want?
Also just FYI, Omarchy has a big history of beginner-level exploitable bugs, so just from a security standpoint I wouldn’t use it.
Enjoy eating meals with Nazis and then breathlessly trying to explain to normal people that you’re not actually one yourself.
And this is just going to fuel on the fire that is DHH’s crusade. He’s already called the linux community “a bunch of clowns” so this is just going to generate more money for his dotfiles and more than likely grow the userbase.
Granted the Omarchy userbase are a bunch of morons. Also doesn’t help that youtube linux content creators are all pretty much praising the damn thing and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know why. Makes it easy to know which creators to unsub from but it literally leaves it with 4 left one of which doesn’t post anymore.
“Me: Oh a list of assholes to avoid, nice. Shopify, who tf is that? EZ. 1 keep sucks, lol. Dell…they make trash, easy. Meta, lol, already done. Coin base more like Rube Base am I right? Digital Ocean still relevant in the hosting world? I thought they’d have gone the way of Go Daddy, Ez boycott list.”
“Brain: You skipped one.”
“Me: reads again Fffffffffffuuuu”
I have no fucking clue how to effectively boycott CloudFlare, gang. That’s…kinda the point of how they positioned themselves.
Stupid fucks, they’re the only one who stands to make as much hand over fist whether open source enshitifies or not. Except if it enshitifies enough, their spigot stops spilling money.
Greedy cunts and the allure of control, what a dynamic duo.
The fuck to use to replace the quintillion different services CF sells?
Asking for…several friends, actually.
Depends. Everything can be replicated given enough time investment. Depends on the cost and if it is even worth.
One can’t really dodge everything. But giving the bare minimum to pass is, in my eyes, acceptable.
Perfect is the enemy of good.
Shopify is the platform that the vast majority of online stores use. It’s basically as hard to avoid as CloudFlare.
I cut out Cloudflare with a combination of Quad9 and NetBird Reverse Proxy. It’s not going to be free forever but if I don’t start putting my wallet behind my principles I might find out I don’t have a job or my kid won’t have a planet.
Yea I currently own all of my domains through cloudflare’s registrar and use them for authoritative DNS. Migrating to another registrar and DNS authority sounds pretty annoying.
It’s really easy. Just check the documentation for transfers on the source and destination registrars. I used to do this all the time at a previous job.
