Army of Darkness, but I almost don’t want to tell you that since I think you might need at least Evil Dead 2 to know what’s going on. It just–literally–drops right in
It doesn’t drop right in. There’s a recap section that explains the backstory enough for the movie to make sense.
Is Army of Darkness the only movie that is a sequel, that isn’t the same genre as the original? Evil Dead is horror/thriller, Evil Dead 2 is a horror comedy remake, and Army of Darkness is a screwball adventure comedy.

My favorite moment in all of cinema is in Godzilla vs King Kong. Godzilla breathes fire on King Kong, and King Kong doesn’t like it, so he reaches down, grabs a tree, pulls it out of the ground, and stuffs it root ball first down Godzilla’s throat to put out the flames.
It’s sublime. Poetry. They should have sent, a poet.
You could make the argument that Alien is sci-fi/horror while Aliens is sci-fi/action.
You could make the argument that a vanilla soy latte is a three bean soup.
I was making a reference to the car, but I’m not sure if people would really understand Ash without at least the second film. It just seems like his attitude to everything would be confusing.
It certainly is different from everything else–they kind of went back to the tone of the second after that–but I wouldn’t be surprised if it gets a horror tag simply because of the well scene.
The recap thing at the beginning shows the car getting sucked into the portal/vortex/whatever.
I’m not warning anyone away from watching Evil Dead 2, that’s a good movie. But I do think you can watch Army of Darkness alone and understand what’s going on. The deadites might not make much sense, but ED2 doesn’t explain them either; asshole ghosts just possess people sometimes to yell about eating souls or whatever, apparently entirely for fun.

As I said, it’s more about Ash’s development for me. Over three movies, he becomes more of a caricature and I am not sure how much people can accept where he’s at in the 3rd movie going in blind. There’s no arc to him in AoD. He starts out over the top and insane. I think seeing at least the 2nd before this gives some explanation to himOh yeah the movie is A Midwestern Dipshit In King Arthur’s Court. It’s a movie about throwing rubber skeletons at Bruce Campbell.

As a kid, when we went to the video rental store I would look at the horror movie covers. They were the coolest!
The two that most stick into my memory are Dead Alive and American Gothic.
Oh hell yeah. Scanners and The Stuff have some awesome covers. As a kid, I thought these movies would be scary as hell, and when I was old enough to finally watch them, I was shocked at how ridiculous and funny they actually are. The smell of theatre popcorn always brings me right back to those moments of fear and wonder looking up at these posters in the cinema lobby.
I have a forever memory of seeing the poster for Jason Goes to Hell hanging up in the theater. I thought the movie must be epic because the poster was so cool.

There are cleaned up versions of this poster online, but that perfection of the image omits the essential aesthetic of seeing it on a beat up VHS tape box in the 99-cent horror section of the video rental store.
