there is for example irrating razor bumps (pseudo folliculitis barbae) which comes with shaving your beard, and it predominantly affects people with curly hair, so black people. this might be the true reason. alternatively I’ve heard pete hegseth has some kind of close personal issues with beards, but i can’t find the source for that anymore. wouldn’t surprise me if he has a beard trauma.

People have shaved for all of history, but the idea that the default is a clear chin is something that only started during WW2 and with the following GI Joe comics. Beards go in and out of style, but to consider the clean face an ideal probably comes from the American religiously puritanical way of thinking.

Most militaries started requiring their soldiers to shave during WWI, because facial hair will break the seal on a gas mask (see also: why I started shaving during covid).

It’s a wild thing. So the term grew out of the manosphere actually, it was mainly a term for present fathers who steered their boys away from that garbage because they recognized it was only going to hurt them. It kind of grew from there to encapsulate everything they hate. Now, they associate beards with hipsters, dads, LGBT+, nerds who like games, music, books, theatre, and basically any man with a soul and two brain cells to rub together, which is precisely who they see as the enemy because they’re so transparently evil.
