      In what way?

Linux might be a bit hacked together and monolithic, but I don’t know about fucked. Some hardware is shitty and locked down, but probably still not the majority.

I say GUI metaphor should happen in hardware. Without the same old fixed frames-per-second, we don’t use CRT anymore.

It’s all but brittle sandcastles we build on hardware made for number-crunching in servers, same like a web-GUI is inferior because it runs on a Document Object Model. Just leads to more bugs and security issues. That we still need to decide between immediate and retained mode rendering, why is that a software question?

Or (GUI) icon painting, that should at least be a kernel call, not something you as a dev have to fiddle around with sizes and alignment on.

Yesyes, i know, backwards-compatibility and market share.

    A robust, comprehensive, granular, libre-content search-engine.

Search on keyword lists with standard shortcuts. eg. Search: “dnb”

Can set licence to only show: PD, CC-by, CC-by-nc-sa, AGPL, GPL3, etc. or multiples of these.

Can select filetype categories for results: text, images, audio, video, software, etc.

Has all the major repos of libre-content indexed, and can pick up licencing detail from other web/ftp files.

Can export the found URL lists to a text-file, eg. for making audio or video playlists, to feed into VLC etc.

    Returns zero full-copyright content ever.

Extra bonus quality: Inbuilt player and jukebox mode.

    * If something similar already exists, let me know.

A multimedia centre like Kodi or Jellyfin with the ability to schedule shows like it was a regular TV channel. With shows playing on their time slots, a random movie starting every day at ten.

There are times that I just want to turn on the TV and watch whatever is on without having to scroll through the entire library for something I could be in the mood for.

FYI, the dev has abandoned this software. It shouldn’t matter too much, because you should NOT put it on the internet as it has not auth at all. So it shouldn’t matter too much. But just fyi

            Thanks for the heads up.

I always get nervous with these warnings because I never use anything remotely so I don’t really know what it means to put it on the internet. Can it be put accidentally or it requires a series of steps for it to be accessed?

Depends on your setup. Is it at home behind NAT? You’ll be fine. If it is on a vps, you’ll need to block the port on your server.

Jellyfin has this awesome option “sort library randomly”. I use that for music and it is great for discovery of music or to find music I haven’t listened to in years. So maybe try this for movies and watch the first one?

Is there any tool that makes it easy to host videos on my website and emulate the YouTube watching experience?

Like, people go to my website, watch the video in a player, then when it ends they get a few tiles either of other videos I have up, or recent videos from others I’ve approved? Maybe it just pulls links and thumbnails from specific RSS feeds I list somewhere on the backend?

A peer-to-peer prediction market where instead of betting on forest fires, we bet on datacenter fires and mansion fires.

You’d bet against the fires if you wanted a payoff when the fire doesn’t happen. You pay when the fire does happen. So anybody who benefits from the fire world have an incentive to bet against it.

Let’s say you don’t want a fire, like it’s your data center. You’ll want to get paid if the fire does happen. So you bet on fire, like you’re buying insurance against it.

Two interesting differences from existing fire insurance.

            • If you’re not an asshole, then now you’re just getting insurance at a better rate because there’s more competing insurers.
            • If you are an asshole, then you’ll find yourself now paying the external cost of owning the data center, as higher insurance rates.

That’s the real point of this software. It would allow crowdfunded defense against people who are destroying the world and own the legal system. Most participants would just be minimizing costs or gambling, not ideologically motivated.

My point is that people would have an incentive to bet for the fire and then cause the fire, so once a bet is published chances are that the fire will happen.

There would need to be sufficient market depth to pay someone to act. So we couldn’t just publish $0.01 bets on everything and watch the town burn. “Coasian” solutions like this are limited by transaction costs.

In practice, the owner of the datacenter would need to either eliminate the externality or watch it burn. If the datacenter is worth more than its external cost, then they can reimburse their victims or pay for cleanup. If the revenue from the datacenter is less than its external costs, then it’s a net loss for society and ought to be shut down.

If such a platform existed so many people would bet for “fire” that there wouldn’t be depth, but if you take a look around lemmy you can see some people hate AI so much they would do it anyways.

Commandline shell which isn’t in a terminal emulator. A nice GUI, and easy discoverability of useful features. It can do everything your traditional commandline shell can do, but it doesn’t live in the 70’s.

I started developing a prototype of this a few years back, but I just don’t have the self discipline to stick with it long enough.
