A few years ago, we had some family friends (a conservative but nice Christian family) over for a movie night. They had a couple of younger girls, I think about 7 and 10 or so, plus ours about the same age. It was October so I suggested Gremlins, as I vaguely remembered enjoying it as a kid - and besides, it’s only PG! It’s a comedy!

      Yeah that was a mistake.

A few months later they came over for dinner and another movie, and this time I was more careful - they wanted a family-friendly action movie, so I suggested Point Break. I honestly don’t know what the fuck I was thinking.

Now I no longer trust my own recollections of how “family-friendly” movies are anymore. I guess I just don’t really pay attention to that.

For some reason they haven’t kept in touch…

Very much so. When I was a kid my folks tried multiple times to get me to watch this movie and I could never get past the tunnel.

As an adult I still can’t watch it and I love me some Gene Wilder otherwise.

I change my mind. I most certainly do not want a boat just like this.

I just that with my kid and it for some reason I laughed so hard my kid thought the whole thing was funny. It’s just so absurd and terrible and wonderful. He’s this nightmare murder dude in a kids movie.

It’s genuiy terrifying. But I made it fun for my kid somehow.

Your example took me a minute to remember what it was from, but yes, Judge Doom definitely deserves a spot on the list.

Chucky scared the ever living shit out of me when I was a kid! I had this recurring nightmare that whenever I’d close my eyes I could see through Chucky’s eyes and he’d be killing people or on his way to my house to get me. It was awful. Now he’s one of my favorite horror icons.

Chucky scared the shit out of me too. That and the Mars Attacks aliens which is pretty funny in hindsight.

I watched the first 10 minutes of Friday the 13th then shut it off because I was too scared. The Jason in my mind was more terrifying than any of his movies.

The Adventures of Mark Twain from 1985 has a scene where Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, and Becky Thatcher enter a sort of pocket dimension and meet a stranger who is just a robe holding a mask. The stranger claims their name is Satan. Satan creates a doll sized castle and gives the children clay to make people. After the people are made Satan gives them life and all 4 characters watch the clay people for a little while. Then Satan calls them insignificant, annoying, and worthless before he smashes some with his hand, lightning strikes other clay people, and the rest get swallowed up by a sinkhole along with the castle. While this is happening Satan’s face/mask distorted and twists until it resembles a skull.

I saw this movie while spending a weekend at a family member’s house as a kid, maybe somewhere between the ages of 5 and 7 (it was an old movie then). I woke up in the middle of the night and this movie was put on while I was left alone in the living room. I don’t remember anything else from this movie, but it definitely fucked me up

Watership Downs is so dark. I found the book as a kid in some cabinet and figured it’d be fun to read about the little bunnies life. That was a harsh loss of innocence. Later as an adult I figured it wasn’t really that bad and I watched the movie. Oh boy.

    The Borg.

I watched Star Trek as a kid with my grandma on our local TV station. The Borg were always so scary to me because not even the super advanced Federation could defeat them. And the assimilation they did of stripping away who and what you were was terrifying.

Then First Contact came out and I learned that they just as vulnerable as anyone else to a 45 ACP and that was alright.
