Parking was my least favourite, it’s worse than the actual driving part. I can’t realistically park on-site where I live, and all the nearby roads are filled up too. There are multiple shopping malls and a university. Very busy area! On the unlikely chance that I need a car, I can just rent an EV by the hour. It costs a fortune and I don’t really need it anyway.

Comradeship // Freechat@lemmygrad.ml•What EDC ("carry every day" items) do you take with you?
0·5 days agoI nearly always carry a backpack. If it might rain then I carry rain-proof pants, a raincoat and a waterproof camping bag and I stuff them into a big army rucksack. I have a longpack currently but I might get a non-longpack size in the future, because most trips around the city don’t require a longpack.
I always carry a tiny Len Lenser 90 lumen torch (p3 core is the model I think) because landlords don’t repair sensor lights outside and one of the hallway lights doesn’t work either. It’s also good to use the torch to signal the bus driver when it’s dark.
The waterproof gear, torch and large backpack are my essential items. Then it’s just the old wallet and phone and maybe the G Shock watch on my wrist so I can use the countdown timer at the laundromat and also check the time without needing to get my phone from my bag or pocket.
Welcome to the club. We have many options today and people ought to slowly transition to a car-free life. I had owned cars on-and-off but I often caught the bus or rode a bike even when I had access to a car.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•[SERIOUS] what conspiracy theory do you believe is 100% true?
0·17 days agoThe confirmation is in all the qu’rans that appear to have been planted in the hijacker’s cars and also on mohammad atta’s luggage that never got put on the plane. Plus the flight training manual in arabic language.
David Icke’s 2019 book “The Trigger” was a good refresher for me. I highly recommend it. Very long book though!

0·19 days agoTrue, I heard that urine tests can go back 2-3 months potentially. Trace amounts.
Once when I was working in a distribution centre in 2015. We were introduced to this new Irish guy who was a truck driver. They were showing him the warehouse and telling us that he’d be working with us. Then a few days later we heard he’d been fired, he probably never did any work and just got fired before he got behind the wheel. Stupid of him to smoke weed or get hung over when he has a class 5 truck license for the biggest trucks. If he’d been up front about it and passed a less strict test I’d be okay with him. I’d like it if companies would ask for employees to be honest about drug use and their commitment to the company.
Either you want to continue with habitual partying and weed or you want a stable job. Not really a hard choice in my opinion.
Board games and card games, but nothing as complicated as Magic The Gathering.
When I say card games I mean games like “World Changers”. I don’t play card games with regular decks (jack queen, king, joker etc)

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•Long-term unemployment is surging in the U.S. There are hidden costs for workers and the economy
0·29 days agoI no longer care about the massive gap on my resume. I might get a job and the job lasts 2 weeks or maybe 4-5 months, then the unrealistic KPIs start to eat away at my dignity and mental health, and I just gotta GTFO of there. After a year or two of unemployment, I find another crappy job that nobody wants to work (for some weird reasons). Now in 2026 I can’t find anything at all. Applying for random jobs never yields anything.
I signed up with a temp agency called Sidekicker that does everything through an app. They just pissed me around with their sign-up process, which was as gameified as Duo Lingo. Then after submitting my video and a photo of me in my boots and hi-vis, they tell me that I did not pass the assessment, with no reason given? So I told them to piss off and just delete my account. Sidekicker was good in 2021 but it’s bad now. They won’t even give me 2 hours of work.

Comradeship // Freechat@lemmygrad.ml•I need to vent a bit and could use some advice comrades
0·1 month agoI have no job and no education, I just volunteer as a groundskeeper at an old anglican church. I believe that volunteering is really good, but I don’t recommend volunteering for large organisations, especially political ones. I just mow lawns and rake leaves and stuff. Very wholesome. The only community that I’m a part of is a weekly open mic at a cafe, and occasional ticket $ gigs or maybe board games with the homies. I still suck at Settlers Of Catan. Usually I hide in my room and just play games on Xbox. At 35 I really don’t care about anything any more. If I get a job it’ll be e-scooters or aged care. Warehouse and forklifts is trash work, stressful and dangerous. If they’ll hire anyone then that’s a warning sign to me.
We all need to bring back board games. Start with a game like quoridor (really stupid game but good for trolling) and also World Changers. Seriously comrades this game called World Changers could save someone’s life, buy it, try it out, spread the word. The game has Karl Marx and Che Guevara as character cards (also Bach and Gengis Khan and some ancient greek stuff).
I bought Ticket To Ride (Europe edition) but I haven’t taken it from its box just yet. It’s hard to organise with people but if you’re already friends with political activists who’re similar age, have similar views, then start with those people and expand toward less political people.
We don’t have to be isolated.
edit: btw I gave up on education too. It costs a lot and I can’t live comfortably with 5-10 flatmates nor can I easily travel to the campus.

Linux@lemmy.ml•What reasons do people have for disliking SELinux?
0·1 month agoIt’s a pain in the ass when you want to run a web server on your PC. You have to disable SELINUX else the damn thing won’t let me modify html pages and show the updates. Everything is just frozen from making any changes. That said, it’s probably easier to do web development another way, my method is nearly two decades obsolete. SELINUX really pissed me off though. I wanted to test forum software on my PC once, and SELINUX was blocking me and I couldn’t figure it out for ages.

World News@lemmy.ml•Senior Russian MP Says Russia Will Begin Targeting Underground Bunkers Used by Ukrainian Leadership in Kyiv
0·1 month agoThe articles on RT explained it very well - the Anchorage talks could lead to an agreement but Ukraine won’t surrender the remaining 15% of Donetsk and Europe keeps arming and assisting Ukraine. Something must be done to make Europe think twice about its actions. Supplying Ukraine with weapons and allowing Ukraine to kill Russian civilians is unacceptable, there is no reason why Ukraine should kill dozens of Russians every month in the border towns. Russia has become too tolerant. They’ve made public warnings for weeks (about NATO countries allowing Ukraine to attack via their air space) this happened before the Ukrainian attack in Luhansk.

0·2 months agoGaming is a drain on my money. I can’t afford any new systems really. If I get a new system it’ll be a tiny BeeLink mini PC just for running Linux - to do the basics link email and banking. Currently I have a Samsung Galaxy a06 lol

My torch is the size of my thumb so it’s pretty neat. Just enough to illuminate the ground in front of me, using nothing but a single AAA battery. Of course after about 2 months I need to replace the battery to ensure that it’s bright enough.
