Buy it for Life@slrpnk.net•Buy it for life | This versatile Japanese chef’s knife has lasted longer than some of my relationshipsEnglish
0·10 months agoI have a carbon steel knife a buddy of mine made, has lasted 10+ years. Holds a decent edge, so I can even shave my arm hair with it when it’s freshly sharpened.
Also have some cheap ass Kiwi brand paring knives made from kind of extremely soft stainless steel. Very easy to sharpen. They get used as steak knives, for cutting cheese, apples, etc.

Canada@lemmy.ca•Supersized American cars shouldn’t be a barrier to Canadians getting some great European options - Why are we banning small cars from being sold in Canada?English
0·1 year agoYup. The Ford F-series trucks are the best selling car in Canada. Gotta brave those dangerous wide suburban roads to get to the rugged Walmart and haul toilet paper.
Not gonna mention the Secret Protocol in the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact that enabled the partition of Poland and the Baltics?
Or that Stalin actually fell for it all, trusted Hitler, disregarded all evidence of Nazi troop buildup until the day of Operation Barbarossa? Then Stalin spent weeks disappeared from public view.
Credit to the Soviets for defeating the Nazis. WW2 would have been lost without them. But they also acted as imperialists in reattaching Tsarist colonies to Russia, dividing Poland and the Baltics with Hitler, invading Finland, not to mention all the puppet states created postwar.
And the Soviets allied with Nazi Germany and carved up Poland with their new buddies.

Solarpunk Urbanism@slrpnk.net•Atlanta is embracing a cheap, effective way to beat urban heat: 'cool roofs'English
0·1 year agoLoose dark clothing encourages airflow. Covering up prevents sunburn and direct solar heating.
For buildings, airflow can cool them too. But it doesn’t need to be done through dark roofs or dark exterior walls. And buildings could have more sunshades and awnings, and smaller windows to prevent solar heat gain.

0·1 year agoFun fact, adding textiles to walls for insulation is where we get the term “furring” from.
I wish awnings were more common. Such a simple way to block out midday or afternoon sun in the hot summer.
They could make a stick that a soldier could put a spherical grenade on to help give extra range. Like an atlatl or one of those tennis ball launchers for dogs.

The amendment to USA’s constitution that “banned” slavery did so EXCEPT as punishment for a crime.

Climate@slrpnk.net•As warming climate hammers coffee crops, this rare bean may someday be your brewEnglish0·1 year agoLocally grown is not always the best for the environment. Eating California rice in California is worse for CO2 than Thai rice, because California rice needs more inputs. Same with growing tomatoes in a natural-gas heated greenhouse in cold climates vs. trucked in from where they grow in the field. Transportation is a very small part of the CO2 footprint of food.

0·1 year agoYes, it’s used to make oilcloth but as far as I know, you’d have to leave the garment to dry somewhere with ventilation for a week or more. However I’ve not done it so if that isn’t the case please correct me.

I agree with you. It’s just nothing new.
