  • Oh, I didn’t realize that Valve already had a product called a companion cube which already looks and functions the same way as this one.

They don’t. The Weighted Companion Cube is a virtual item in Valve’s Portal series of games.

It is not an actual product in real life. Even in the game, it does not “function the same way as this one” at all. It arguably has no function. In game, it is a glorified paperweight.

With that said, it is trademarked (or copyrighted or whatever) all the same, so other companies are not allowed to make something that even resembles it without permission. That is just how the stupid US trademark/copyright/patent/bullshit system works.

  • There is no universal Lemmy rule or anything against that, but any instance could hypothetically set their own rule stating “You are not allowed to have an active account on any other instance” or something. With that said, I have never seen an instance with a rule anywhere near that (granted, I have only read the rules for a handful of instances, not even close to most instances). It is unlikely you will ever see a rule like that, but it could technically happen. Make sure to thoroughly read the rules of whatever instance you are considering signing up for.

  • Originally training the model had used the energy resources of that original corporation or whatever. But when you download that model and start running it on your own hardware, you are using your own energy.

Think of it kind of like some software like Jellyfin. When the developers write the software, they do so using their own electricity. But when you download Jellyfin and actually run the software on your own hardware, you are now only using your electricity, not the developer’s electricity at all.
