Interesting that you had those ready to go, tho I’ve done a bit of a deep dive of the topic myself to try and understand it (IIRC I was spurred by an unfortunate series of back-to-back viewings of Elfen Lied, Attack on Titan, and Sword Art Online, which turned me off of anime for a year) so I kinda get it. Interestingly enough, incest in general is not quite so damaging across the animal kingdom (or plants, but plants are a whole other discussion) as many people think. A healthy population should have enough genetic diversity and lack of those garbage genes which cause defects that an incest pairing won’t affect most offspring. Humans are just much more closely related to each other than would be usual for a population our size – we’ve gone through at least one (possibly more than one) population bottleneck that left us less genetically diverse than we should be – so it’s a lot easier for genetic diseases to be passed on through incest.

In some cases, incest has allowed animals to colonize environments they’d otherwise not be able to. Komodo dragons might be one such example, as they use ZW chromosomes instead of XY – females are ZW while males are ZZ – and are capable of parthenogenesis. That means a singular female can, separated from any male, lay a clutch of “clone” eggs which will all hatch male and thus have a mate to continue the species. This may have been how Komodo dragons colonized the islands they call home.

Oh, damn, my mistake. You’re definitely a rarity in the anime fandom, then. I only know of Twinkle Nora Rock Me!, Chargeman Ken, and other similarly notorious anime from the 70s and 80s because of this one youtuber Kenny Lauderdale who covers old anime like that. It may have been from him that I even learned of YKK.

I would never be able to get into collecting LaserDiscs for various reasons but I tip my hat to you for being able to and helping with preservation, however small.

I’m not going to try and claim I’m all that familiar since I’m not really in the community (got maybe a tiny handful of friends who are) but I’ve not actually seen the furmation part but once or twice, I think for most people it’s just “transformation”, no?

Personally, my favorite parts of it have always been the themes of connecting with people and the hedgehog’s dilemma, rather than all the action-y bits or the heavy-handed religious symbolism. Between it, Eureka Seven, and The Big O, and comparing them to the likes of Code Geass and whichever-actual-Gundam-series-I-watched, I learned I don’t really care for mecha being mecha, but I enjoy when mecha are metaphor.

My condolences. Haibane Renmei is one of my favorites.

I think on the one hand it is fair to say NGE is one of the greats from its time and arguably one of the most influential anime ever made (to the point where it’s now part of Japan’s cultural identity – you can hear Cruel Angel’s Thesis just causally as waiting room music for instance).

On the other hand, even as a fan myself I recognize how many brain-dead evangelical (heh) supporters try to tout it as the end-all-and-be-all of anime when it’s really just an unorthodox entry into a very specific type of genre.
