  • Even the “slop” is quality content. Media colors our understanding of things, and for better or worse the general understanding of legal proceedings comes from things like movies and r/LegalAdvice disasters.

He provides informed and informative reviews of common level misconceptions through those videos, meeting people where they are to educate them about the facts. When a piece of media gets it right, and when it’s so off that you’d get tackled by the bailiff, are valuable insights to the layperson.

  • Yeah the move is to be supportive, but follow Adam Savage’s policies on gear: start with the cheapest option that’s serviceable, and go for the best stuff once the cheap stuff breaks (or you get good enough to justify the good stuff).

I’ve dabbled in a lot of hobbies and I follow this principle. Sometimes I get bored, and the low investment was well worth the experience of experimenting. Sometimes I keep at it intermittently, but the cheap gear is sufficient for my use. Sometimes I get good enough to justify the upgrade.

  • I draw a distinction between “complaining” and “lodging a complaint”, based on the subject and recipient.

“Complaining” is when the recipient of the complaint is someone other than the subject (e.g. criticizing the actions of Democrats to online leftists). This doesn’t really accomplish anything.

“Lodging a complaint” is when the recipient is the subject (e.g. criticizing the actions of Democrats via direct correspondence, or criticizing online leftists in a space inhabited predominantly by online leftists). This is effective communication and has the potential to actually prompt a response to the complaint.

SMCF is pretty clearly utilizing the second to bring attention to the problem of the first. And it is a huge problem. These leftist spaces are packed with ideological purists who favor moral superiority to effective action that requires strategy and compromise.
