I wish you were exaggerating but my workplace has been sending multiple bricked laptops a week in for warranty. All windows update.

Maybe if you’re worried about decreasing traffic don’t require an account just to read something on the internet.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Manifestos, Fear, and ‘Loser Thinking’: Inside Proton’s AI Reckoning
14·8 days agoI already think proton mail is pretty slow to render/load, they don’t have much room to make it worse before it’s too much-in other words they better be real careful with that vibe coding.
In general these events have me thinking of switching providers (and I have a paid tier).

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Anon notices what they've taken from us
0·20 days agoA phone that would fit in my cup holder, and I could reach the other corner of the screen with my thumb-without moving the phone around was so much more usable.
I agree with that and care very much about privacy, but for me there’s a big difference between privacy and security-it’s why I’d take an out of date linux install over freshly patched windows 11-I think that in the right use case one could argue CVEs aren’t relevant so long as they’re not being exploited. Obviously though an up to date linux/graphene/whatever install is the best of both worlds.
I think a lot of these views for me were born from an anticonsumption standpoint. Some corporation decides to stop releasing software updates for a device, on their terms, and now I’m supposed to open my wallet? Nah. I used an out of date phone for 6 years and nothing bad came of it, but again it’s down to who you are and how you use it.
Unpopular opinion: security is overrated unless you do dumb things or are a high profile target

Linux@lemmy.ml•Talk of AI in KDE sets the community ablaze
0·1 month agoThis is my opinion as a casual and probably more mainstream linux user: I switched to linux primarily because it’s not windows, and what is windows? Bloated, adware, spyware, AI infested, and buggy. I’m starting to worry about the direction some projects are going. We need a whole distro with the core value of being anti- these things.

2·2 months agoWell said. A lot of the freedoms we enjoy are a use it or lose it scenario. For example a business is more likely to stop accepting cash if only 1% of their customers use it, so I still use it even though I would often prefer my card.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•Pre-enshittification tech. [discussion/fun]
12·2 months agoVintage audio equipment. It’s purpose built without gimmicky features, high quality, high performance, and built to last with discrete components and service manuals. Really it doesn’t have to be vintage, but it’s usually the old stuff that prioritizes these traits. I usually play local files (mp3/flac) over a bluetooth DAC but vinyl is fun once in a while. The same living room system gets used for movies and whatever else too.

10·2 months agoSame with my car. I think it’s more important than ever to learn how to fix things. “Buy a new one” is becoming less and less viable for certain types of products if you value longevity, privacy, independence, finances, sustainability, etc.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•would you wait for the Grapheneos-Motorola phone or buy a new pixel now?
0·3 months agoAside from how the phones actually compare, I think it’d be good to show there is a market for a factory graphene phone. I want companies to see the difference (financially) when they start taking privacy and other pro consumer ideas seriously.
