I live in an area where I think the worst drivers in the US live. I absolutely hate people who honk as soon as the light turns green. You don’t know what I can see, you don’t know if it is safe to go. Because sometimes it isn’t. I’ve had to learn to still look both ways after the light turns green because almost once a week (and I only drive 2-4 days most weeks) I see someone completely blow the red going 60 in a 45.

I also blame phones for traffic, because it goes the other way too. Why did you miss that green, because 3 people in front of you were on their phones. I usually give a slow 5 count before giving a beep.

If you truly want to be petty, sit until it’s a late yellow before you go. They’ll be stuck at the red. I wouldn’t do it if there’s anyone stuck behind the honker, but if it’s just the two of you then it’s an easy way to be very petty. It’ll piss some people off so badly that they’ll be liable to run the red.

Or just drive off. If you rise to every barb, you’re almost definitely going to end up with a severely painful, chronic erection. Getting shot or run over is also on the table.

The last time I had to do this I pulled a rapier, actually. Although in my defense, the guy behind me jumped out with a tire iron first. It was purest happenstance that I had the thing in my back seat at the time but damned if the look on his face wasn’t worth it.

I’ve recounted this tale before. I have to wonder how that guy tells people his side of that story…

Don’t let other idiots turn you into just as big of an idiot.

Actually, you’re definitely the bigger idiot here. The honker may have annoyed you, but you are annoying the 30 people behind you to spite one single person.

It’s not my job as a driver to worry about someone behind me thinking I’m moving too slowly. It’s my job as a driver to be aware if some other moron is running a red light. And as impatient as you mother fuckers are, it’s probably you.

It’s fascinating that you think taking petty revenge by slowing down excessively to “punish” a single jerk right behind you, and the subsequent line of innocent people with no part in your conflict, is reasonable behaviour. The jerk behind you annoyed a single person (you), and in turn you annoy dozens of people that have done nothing to you whatsoever.

No it is…it’s fascinating that you can’t (or won’t) see that you’re a bigger traffic issue than the person honking and believe that your reaction is justified.

Oh. Wait, we have a misunderstanding. This can happen online when you can’t type inflection or tone. My bad.

I am fully aware of my actions, the results, the costs, and fully accept any consequences that come my way. I am not under any impression that I am not a problem, not the bigger asshole, or less petty than anyone else. I drive about 200 to 250 miles in a 40 hour work week and have tons of experience with bad drivers. Sometimes I get in a mood and basically lash out at everyone. It’s a fault of mine and I know it. I’m not apologizing for it or working to correct it. Petty? You bet. Asshole? Present. Cause of accidents? No, I’m actually very careful not to do that.

I’m by and large a way more courteous driver than most people I see. You have a turn signal on? I’ll do everything I can to help you change lanes. I zipper merge like they showed in the text book. Do I speed? Yes, but never more than 5mph over the limit and never in a resedential area. Every bicyclist gets at least 5 feet of clearance. People walking dogs get the same.

But you honk at me in the first second of a green? We’re waiting till I feel like going.

That behavior is almost completely dictated by where you live. The safest speed to go while driving is the speed at which the majority of people around you are driving. In my city, that happens to be at least 10 mph above the speed limit.

That’s insane. That’s an insane thing to say. Me going 10 over in a school zone is dangerous as fuck even if everyone else is doing it. Me going 10 over in a residential zone or a built up area is also super dangerous.

What are your general speed limits in those areas?

Eeeease oofffff the braaaake…. Mooove fooot toooo gaaaaassssss… Creeeeep into intersection at 0.05mph….

…just as long as they get through before the light turns red again, fuck everyone behind them, I guess.

Yeah, personally I’m all about clear the intersection. There’s conflicting movements and it’s a bottleneck, let’s all get through as efficiently as we can. This doesn’t mean flooring it, but we can at least apply some throttle, and not just through but beyond the intersection, because contrary to what some folks believe, there are people on the road other than you.

Sorry, I thought it was clear that it was an unfamiliar situation as a new driver, the lights was in a slightly unusual configuration so I didn’t see the light as I pulled up and thus never realized that I needed to shift my head to see it.

It’s natural to take a second before taking off, either unintentionally or intentionally due to safety. Maybe leave on time to account for those extra few seconds that they are holding you up.

It’s not only natural, it’s a good idea. Especially if you are crossing a large road.

I ride a motorcycle more often than not (see user name) and it’s vital to ensure that the cross traffic is actually stopping when their light is red. You aren’t “protected” because your light is green, and there’s nothing physically stopping any asshole blowing the light and ramming into the side of you, probably without slowing down in the slightest first. That’s because they’re also staring at their phone. I can’t even go a week anymore without watching some moron sail straight through a red light right in front of me such that if I hadn’t spotted them first they would have run me over. And it’s happening more and more often as drivers are more distracted than ever before. A couple of years ago I’d only see this sort of thing once every few months.

That phrase tends to be much less literal when its said by those who are getting honked at regularly to move off from the lights.

If someone is telling you they get honked at all the time for no reason there usually is a reason (or several) and they just refuse to acknowledge what they’re doing.
