I joined because Reddit has become a cesspool of bots and toxic behaviour. Lemmy is still completely open-sourced, while Reddit isn’t at all now. Also, when you first sign up on Reddit currently, you get completely ignored now and can’t post or comment on regular subs.
I was banned from Reddit for posting NSFW pics of my own body in the right adult subs, and appealed and they still did not unban me, so here I am! Good riddance to that place, they are getting too ban happy over there and it was becoming too buggy.
Sigh
*closes tab after seeing no Lemmy NSFW posts*
I got banned on one for posting my above averaged hog…
ha mine is below average, didn’t stop them from banning me though. Someone probably thought it was too ugly to be real or something lmfaoo.
Yea if that sub was NSFW, that’s fucked up that they banned you.
Yeah, they are getting a little too comfortable with the ban hammer over there. I’ve been reading threads of others that had the same thing happen to them. Soo glad I’m not alone and so glad I found this place!
I got banned for accidentally using “far right extremist terminology” lol. I’m still not entirely sure what I did wrong
Yep! I’ve known people to get banned for using far left terminology and with nothing threatening either being said. It seems if you piss off one of the mods on there on one of their bad days, then it can easily be game over for your time in that sub, or even your account. it’s that easy to catch a ban that you probably have less chance of catching a cold lmfao. Reddit has given the mods far too much power. I’m so glad for the Fediverse!
i never used Reddit, but came from 9gag here in the search for something where you can actually filter the content. being foss and decentralized (both of which I’m a huge fan) was an added bonus
Just a heads’ up — the majority of accounts that will see this post aren’t from lemmy.world. For example, I’m from feddit.online. Your posts are federated, which means your instance, lemmy.world, passes your post to our instances, where we see them.
I understand that, meaning what made you join the community, if you will.
I just looked up feddit.online, but what is it exactly? Is it a Lemmy instance or more a collection of different instances on one feed? I’m still new to the Fediverse and the whole thing so sorry if I sound ignorant.
It’s a piefed instance. One of the coolest things about the fediverse is that you can follow from different kinds of platforms, so some folks follow from a mastodon instance, or a sharkey instance, or a pixelfed instance, but they can still participate the same as people on a lemmy instance. Piefed is basically the same ui as you see, with a few minor differences, but some of them get pretty exotic.
Ok I had a reply typed up here last night but I must have deleted it by accident :/ it was a post saying how cool it all is and thanking you for explaining it!
When these threads come up, it’s always interesting to see how many of the “I was banned for no reason at all, I only said puppies are cute” users have a post history here on Lemmy that makes me think “I don’t agree with full-on bans, but in this case, I can kind of see why they might’ve done it.”
Also, I always wonder with these how many people are saying “I was banned from Reddit” when actually they were only banned from a specific sub. It’s super easy to get banned from the average sub on Reddit (at least it used to be). Much higher bar, generally speaking with caveats, to get banned from the site itself.
Having said all that, I did get a temporary site-wide suspension from Reddit, the REAL DEAL, for using the word “retard” in the accurate non-abusive way when discussing methods to slow the growth of mold. So, there’s that.
As for what made me join this place? I was already ready to be done with Reddit. I was aware of Mastodon, checked it out, definitely not for me, but by looking into that I found out that there was a news aggregator style alternative of similar principle called Lemmy.
The Reddit APIcolypse of 2023. I came crawling back to Reddit a few weeks ago though. Lemmy doesn’t have the size to support the kind of niches that Reddit has, and Reddit has a much broader user base as well, so conversations are more interesting because I can’t predict what 80% of the responses to any topic will be.
Because reddit cutoff API access to third-party apps.
I didn’t!
If you’re here, you joined. You literally made an account, that is joining, lol!
But I don’t have a lemmy.world account.
If you are talking to me, you are still in the Lemmy zeitgeist per say.
Right, then your question should be “What made you join Lemmy?”.
Lemmy.world is just one of many lemmy instances.
I will correct it, I now see I first botched the title.
You asked about lemmy.world specifically. They are on lemmy but not on lemmy.world. People from different instances talking to each other is the whole point of lemmy (and the fediverse as a whole).
I meant just Lemmy, I fixed it. which is another good option here. Editing the titles.
Reddit api change and could not use a free app to access the place.
As for why .world specifically I don’t remember. I picked one from the list and it was probably not sorted alphabetically at least.
Got banned from reddit for telling someone to crawl back into their hole because they were defending circumcision while saying female genital mutilation was disgusting and abhorrent.
I was on my way out anyway but getting banned for infants shouldn’t have their genitals mutilated at all was the final nail that made me jump ship.
I still use it occasionally anonymously for porn but I’ve noticed a lot of the porn subs are shutting down so I’ll eventually quit using it altogether.
I miss lemmynsfw. Fedinsfw isn’t even remotely as good and as far as I’m aware there’s no app for it so I’m forced to open it in my browser and it’s not very optimized
I got the warning for supporting Luigi Mangione. I immediately looked for an alternative.
Mainly curiosity
disagreeing with Reddit policy change, a few years ago. Appreciating Lemmy/Piefed being algorithm-free, and allowing me to filter out whatever content I would consider noise.
I heard you were on here.
Oh my…
I came because of the Reddit API closure. I stayed because of the huge anarchist and communist communities.
too many people got banned , by thier AI moderation.
Yep! I got shadow banned just for using a VPN for me.
