Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Any other Windows or Mac users here?English
0·4 months agoI use all 3. Mac and Linux on my personal computers. Strong believer in use the tool that works best for the situation.
Battery life was the saling point for the Mac, software is whatever, I try to avoid all locked in features and software. Prefer Linux due to flexibility. Windows has annoyed me with all the crashes, slow performance, and increasing need to dump shit on us. Only use it personally when a game doesn’t work on Linux.
At work, its just windows. I use WSL when I need to do some coding outside of a browser. Most of the time its noticeably slower than it would be on Mac or Linux but not my computer, so its whatever.

0·5 months agoShould work, although haven’t tried Teams or Outlook, but I would recommend putting it on a different profile, you can make multiple users, then enable the google play store on there. Leave that as you work profile or google profile. Helps keep things separated.

0·7 months agoGuess code review and troubleshooting. Not really sure, I have only really used it for code templates and ideas for troubleshooting to look into.
The most use I found is rewriting documents in a specific way. But only after I write it first. Then go back and forth. Just to make tone consistent.

Linux@programming.dev•CachyOS Is Now the Most Popular Desktop Distro on ProtonDBEnglish
0·7 months agoIs it worth nuking my PopOS to try CachyOS?
I like the stability of Ubuntu and a lot of projects usually have deb files officially, like Signal. However, my start up time on Pop is oddly long and have Bluetooth issues (which is fine as I dont use it very often).
I was on Bazzite for a bit. It was fine but the immutability was a bit annoying for me when editing files. Then on Nobara which was also fine but plasma crashed on me several times which caused me to repair it each time in order for it to work again.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•What is Radicale and how do I use it?English
11·7 months agoCan also check out Nextcloud. Yes, its more overkill than just calendar and contact sync but its not that hard to set up and self-host. It has an interface for you to fix your calendar and contacts graphically and works well with DAVx5, if on Android. Believe you can just add the CalDav and CardDav for iOS, but have not tried it personally.

0·7 months agoI think you’ll be OK but there will be a slightly learning curve since it is a different OS. As for documents make sure they work well with either LibreOffice or OnlyOffice, which should be available on other OSes. There are also always online office suites if needed.
If you have a spare flash drive, you can also test out Linux distros (flavors) before installing them in a live mode, like a demo.
Best of luck.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What desktop operating system would you recommend to the average user?English
0·8 months agoMac or Linux, something like Mint, Zorin, or PopOS.
Mac for the better ingregration with more popular apps. Other than that, Linux, but test it out first since not all hardware works correctly. I had good luck with hardware on all that I have tried so far.

Open Source@lemmy.ml•how much do you donate to the apps you use?English
0·9 months agoYearly budget of $200 for any apps I constantly use. I split the amount between the apps. Donate more if I have extra funds.
Just finished Alan Wake. Not what I expected from the game but overall interesting. Somewhat like the idea of making it like a TV Show. Short but story was decent.

Linux@lemmy.ml•Linux is awesome at home, but aren't y'all forced to use Windows at work?English
0·10 months agoIts not my machine, so I don’t really care. As long as it doesn’t prevent me from doing the work, then that is the employers problem what OS they want to enforce.
On my personal computer, I run what I want and will continue to do so where possible. Hence, why I like using Linux.

Proxmox@lemmy.world•Proxmox host stops responding, LXC continuesEnglish
0·11 months agoIf its only the main OS not responding to SSH and the web portal just disappears after a couple of minutes use, then it might be your router is reusing the IP address linked to Proxmox. Proxmox uses a static IP address, so will not change once set up. Your router on the other hand may re use the address if it was never reserved specifically for the Proxmox machine. In other words, two devices are fighting for the same IP address on your router.
This is what happened to me. Took a while to figure it out until someone suggested checking the IPs and Mac addresses on the router. No issue since fixing it on the router. Just reserve the address on the router, reset the device that is using the same address (if you can figure it out), and reset the router. Make sure you are reserving the address for the correct machine by chcking the Mac address.

OpenCloud is a simpler and lighter version of OwnCloud written mostly in Go. There is a docker compose version of it. Also there is a mobile application for it, as well, if wanted.
OxiCloud is a newer project written in Rust. It’s functional but it is still in development. Deployment is pretty simple and mostly docker. No clients yet outside of the web interface.
