In many (if not most) sectors the Canadians have already seen a substantial switch to exporting to other regions. That’s why they have not seen a substantive decrease in exports despite the US tariffs. There are several sectors that are being held back because of other trade issues that the government has the ability to resolve and they’ve already been making friendly with several countries they were already having a variety of trade or political conflicts with under the previous government (China/India for instance). So the current administration absolutely has the power to help with this shift, which is economically wise.

You’re probably wondering why people are downvoting you, but this is really no different than asking an abused spouse why they didn’t stop their partner from beating them.

If you don’t have another copy of a film I’d keep it. If you have DVD or more advanced versions consider purging the VHS, but it’s always worth checking to see if the more modern copies that exist have been changed in some way (eg Star Wars).

Beyond the hacked SMS system thing, you’d be amazed how many places sell your number to data brokers and those data brokers have no issue selling to scammers. I used to get dozens of spam and scam calls a week. I used a service to purge myself from data brokers and switched my phone on all services to an SMS only phone number and I now get at most 1-2 spam calls a week and the scammers stopped entirely. From this point forward unless I absolutely need to talk to you you’re not getting my phone number.

They auto updated my 2007 to 365 when my firewall crashed (I had the updated blocked) and then required a subscription. This has happened twice and is such a pain in the ass to reverse. I switched to Libreoffice.

The Canadian and Provincial governments have done this over 25 times in the last 30 years. Yes, many are “essential” workers like health care, but it’s also included port workers, rail workers, transit workers, elementary through post-secondary teachers, construction workers, ferry operators, etc…

You may not consider Air Canada to be essential and the government should mind it’s own business, AC is the only passenger service for many people in small communities who use it for accessing a variety of essential services that are not available in their community. The flight attendants should be paid more, should be paid for hours at work and while they are at whether they are flying or not, but it’s also not a pure black and white scenario that people love to paint it as.

All the comments make it seem like this is a new thing to all of you? There’s been many strikes where in identical situations workers have been sent back and both sides are forced into binding arbitration. Generally the government, whether it be federal or provincial, wait a lot longer to do that order, but let’s be realistic this is grossly disruptive beyond Air Canada so there is some rationale. To be clear, I’m not saying I’m for it, but this isn’t new. It is worth noting that when this does occur the arbitrators tend to lean more towards those who were forced back.
