Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How are you getting free from tech bro influence?English
0·4 months agoMy thing is, is that it isn’t so much about the things I use rather than what these platforms expect me to be which is a good capitalist doggy. One that feels the need to always CONSOOOM, at any given time. I’m not really about that, for I value what money I get. So I go out and thrift, I don’t subscribe to twenty different subscription services. I don’t just buy things for the sake of buying.
It’s all a big mental game.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Lemmy – lacking tolerance and acceptance?English
0·4 months agoThe stupid karma scoring system doesn’t help matters. When Lemmy and the Fediverse began, I was hopeful that we’d be rid of such things. Sadly, people feel we need to still have them and look where that has gotten us. Are you trying to be Reddit or not trying to be Reddit? Because if you’re aiming for the latter, you’ve fundamentally failed.
I hear so many excuses why we have scoring systems, but none of them add up. People will upvote anything they feel fits their world view and downvote things they feel doesn’t. It creates artificial engagement. It does nothing for the ecosystem as a whole.

Games@lemmy.world•Fallout Game in Development at Xbox-Owned Studio Might Have Been Canceled; Bethesda Would Rather Staff Up Than Give It (or Elder Scrolls) to OthersEnglish
0·4 months agoI wouldn’t be upset if there is no new Fallout game for a decade or two. I really recall some article or some interview or maybe an opinion piece that said about how stretched for ideas Bethesda has made with Fallout as is. What we already have here of Fallout is more than enough.
Bethesda should be more worried about how they’re going to go about with Elder Scrolls VI.

Games@lemmy.world•Epic Games needs Fortnite players to "help pay the bills" as the multi-billion-dollar company raises V-Bucks prices while making Battle Passes and Crew way worse in valueEnglish
0·4 months agoI think by ‘bills’ they mean ‘we need to pay licensing fees for the random shit we decided to incorporate into our shitty battle royale game’.
I’ve seen the likes of Eminem, random nobody streamers, Jason Voorhees, washed up things become just things in Fortnite. You know, why not go all the way, get the entire cast of Seinfield, Friends and other no-nonsense shit in there while you’re at it.
Epic only looks like the dumbasses here because they truly believe that these things are all what people would want. When they’re catering to a generation that would not have any clue who any of these things are in the past 20 - 40 years ago.

0·4 months agoThat problem can be applicable to any service where you lost an e-mail, you know you’re registered to them, but for some reason they didn’t think things through enough about these kinds of scenarios happening. So they just subject people to automated circle-jerking or asking for blood samples to prove you’re with them before even lifting a finger.
Any sane and good service would’ve changed the e-mail to the one you’re on.

Games@lemmy.world•Valve says 5,863 titles earned over $100,000 on Steam in 2025English
0·4 months agoHe conceded that earning $100,000 could mean wild success for one team or “total disaster” for another, but reiterated his belief that “dramatically more games” are finding success on the PC storefront.
I don’t know with that. I think most teams would be happier getting more than 100k. If you’re an indie team and you’re driven by how well you want your game to go, I would think you’d like to make more than 100k. Especially given how games bigger than yours go to multi-million statuses.
Also he never described what number of said team that 100k would be good for. I think maybe a 2-person team. But more than 2, like 10, then making 100k would be considered a total disaster scenario.

Games@lemmy.world•The Helldivers 2 Community needs to get a fucking grip on itselfEnglish
0·4 months agoOkay so this is entirely going off the top of my head as I remembered it.
So in 2017, the MeToo movement was strong (actually I just learned it started as early as 2006 on MySpace, just gained lots of momentum by 2017). And, it was strong and going where lots of allegations were fired off from women who were sexually assaulted or objectified or other similar things afflicted to them.
And allegations were made towards Alec Holowka, who was the Developer/Programmer/Musician of Night in the Woods. He was alleged to have physically and emotionally abused Zoe Quinn in 2012. These allegations didn’t come to light until August of 2019. Within a day after the allegation, the team behind Night in the Woods immediately severed ties with Alec, they claimed they had evidence and all that.
Four days after the allegation and the severation, Alec committed suicide. Now this sparked a huge drama-storm of its own and has heavily divided the Night in the Woods community. Because, the allegations were left unresolved which made a lot of people think that Zoe Quinn just wanted to ruin Alec’s life. Keep in mind, MeToo was a wildfire of its own because as we’ve learned later on after that wave, people were found to have made lots of unproven allegations just to ruin another’s reputation.
Not to say all of them were unproven, it is just a large amount of alleged claims were. It was just exhausting to hear yet another allegation come up after so many years after the fact that it happened and then it becomes a giant he-said she-said dramasode that goes on and on and on. You can see the problem. Also, the whole GamerGate thing was happening too.
All I know from the whole thing was that people really, really hated Zoe Quinn. It was a huge messy situation that went off the rails, divided a community, alienated people about MeToo, made people hate Zoe .etc
Just, ugh. I hated everything about that incident. It’s just another incident where people didn’t sit the fuck down, analyze things closely, figure out who is telling the truth and coming to conclusions based on those findings. People rushed to conclusions right off the bat, immediately sided with Zoe just because she was a woman and demonized Alec just because he was a man.

Games@lemmy.world•Games you've given honest tries for and just don't find funEnglish
0·4 months agoI’ll vouch some for this. I had tried getting back into Terraria some odd months ago. So much has changed, you’ll end up going to the guides almost guaranteed more than ever. It’s very overwhelming now, to where I’m honestly missing the earlier days. Like, before Moon Lord was added in.

Might just be a good thing. Because optimizing is what people have been demanding a lot of out of developers for a long time now.
