You can only boot from the C Drive these days because a modern BIOS AI has such a small model it can only read at a first grade level. The first commands it understands are C Drive “the discovery command”, C Drive Run “initial boot”, Run Drive Run “OS handover”.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Things you feel Star Trek handle poorly? (In general, political, technical, etc, share your opinion)English
0·5 days agoFair but depressing take. I’d say one of the critical parts of diversity in Star Trek is showing how different personalities and backgrounds working together can accomplish more. I just wish it sometimes worked against the Federation as well.

0·5 days agoThe lack of racial diversity for the empires outside of the Federation makes it feel like somehow only the Federation ever figured out how to work with others. Even problematic caste style situations do not come up enough, let alone just simple variations of races.
The most “diverse” other empire is somehow the Dominion. We know the other empires have other races in them as well. It’s such a Federation centric view of the universe and I feel that it reinforced my America centric mindset because the parallels seem so direct to me. We are diverse, everyone else is easily groupable into divided others. Only we are Free. Only we are willing to work together.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Can anyone overthrow Steam on PC? "As long as Valve is independent and not a publicly traded company," analyst says it looks impossibleEnglish
0·10 days agoThe fact that they have made terrible business choices doesn’t mean it is impossible to make good one.
The subscription model is not for driving positive revenue it is to smooth out investor concerns. You have steady revenue streams to reassure that your market is stable so you don’t suffer as hard when you drop a Redfall.
The big issue is massive failure of handling day 1 releases. They made it TOO good of a deal. It probably is a corporate structure issue where the division owning game pass was able to sacrifice a neighboring divisions revenue so they could get good metrics.

0·10 days agoMicrosoft GamePass was serious competition and they ruined it, for now. They had managed to build a system where there was no reason for folks not to buy in, people got nearly unlimited games and then often paid for DLC and cash shop items for games they didn’t even own. It was converting the average gaming market to an a la cart style cash shop which as much as 2010 me would consider this offensive, today it is often better for gamers without money.
The only other thing that would seriously compete with Steam would be a marketplace that had tradeable games but I think the game makers don’t want this so no developer would sign up for it.
Itch.io exists and it does a fantastic niche gaming distribution job so I don’t see how a new competitor can do better than what is already out there.
There was a law a few years back that prevented giving water to people standing in line to vote. Lines in places where your vote matters can take hours. You also do not get time off work so you have to use a personal day or just get paid less that week.
The people who reference Dunning-Kruger often vastly overestimate how competent they are at statistics.

0·1 month agoThe color is better but why is this needed? Why on a TV show budget would you chose to put the people most likely to be in a fight scene or show physicality into even more prosthetics and makeup.
This should have been done as a part of a movie budget that the show had to then deal with like it was the first time around.

Technology@lemmy.world•Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and Peter Thiel All Fled California’s Billionaire Tax. Nvidia’s CEO Isn’t Going Anywhere. Even With an $8 Billion Bill Coming His WayEnglish
101·2 months agoThe average tax income from billionaires in california looks to be around 10million a year. So combined the about 200 billionaires in california are paying 2 billion a year. Rough numbers would be that is 150 of them left then the one time tax would start being a negative income in 10 years. That assumes money stays flat.
Honestly there is no way that this ends up being a serious net negative and these folks are still operating in California enough that they may fail to avoid residency review.

Technology@lemmy.world•Linus Torvalds says AI has made 'huge' Linux kernel updates the new normalEnglish
0·3 months agoWhy? I consistently see these anti AI purity tests come up.
We need people who are skeptical to engage on AI.
People hate technology and change. Before AI it was smartphones. Before smartphones it was photoshop/digital art and CGI. Before CGI it was the Internet. Before Internet it was TV. Before TV it was cars. Before cars it was industry. Before industry it was books.
Someone probably was anti cave paintings because it ruined the skill of passing down the stories by word of mouth.
Something is always coming along that is both horrible for society as it is and something we come to accept as common place. You can want to return to our roots but even that I guarantee you would still pick some level of technology you don’t want to do without.

0·3 months agoMy worry is that the people we need engaged on AI because they have a healthy mindset to question and wrangle it, are instead being forced to ignore AI or pledge to be anti AI by their social circles and customers.
So instead we have absolute Kool aid drinkers driving the AI adoption.
We went through this with the internet but I think a lot of folks now are too young to remember it and unsurprisingly the people who were anti internet didn’t store their concerns and complaints in the currently used modern repository of all knowledge.

Technology@lemmy.world•Cory Doctorow: The people who tell you ‘AI is changing everything’ are lyingEnglish
0·3 months agoEverything is guessing, only death is certain. I’ve worked with AI/ML for over 15 years long before folks got all hot and bothered by it. Your examples you give are great because if you walked up to a person and just said 5 you might get as random of answers and you gave.
Assuming by AI you mean LLMs, because that is what is hot on social media today, they use statistical probability models to be able to rate their input to output consistency. It is measurable but could never be 100%. No compute or person is 100%, but an LLM is orders of magnitude less consistent than traditional compute.
I use AI on a daily basis. I trust it less than people, but I also am able to feed it dumb questions which is nice.

0·3 months agoAI is any compute model performing complex enough reasoning that the output does not always resemble the input. They are by definition non deterministic and the same ask can provide different outputs without being influenced by other inputs.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Do women actually enjoy sex? edit: Am a woman, and just curious.
0·3 months agoThere are conditions where sex is painful that exist for both genders. Vaginismus is maybe 6% for women and phimosis is maybe 3% for men. Numbers on these things are tough to get as many people suffer them quietly thinking they are normal.
If you or your partner experience issues it is important to know you are not alone and you have choices. That said some folks also just do not enjoy sex. Many certainly do, regardless of gender or physicallity.
If you are having issues and you don’t want to, I would advise talking with someone you trust and also seeing a doctor. It is good to get a few viewpoints on issues like this as sometimes they can be dismissed.

We need more RISC V systems in the wild with gaming capability but for now ARM is a step in the right direction. It still is proprietary architecture though.
I’ve been running Steam on ARM with an old phone I converted to gaming handheld for my kid. It runs about half the games we want it to which is better than I expected but not good enough. Support grows so rapidly that I have seen massivd performance and support gains there month over month.
