It’s a Magnus effect sail. It’s the force that makes a spinning ball curve. They’ve made the ball huge (5m diameter) and stretched it into a cylinder. At least for the gas this is the start of a better way of thinking about the problem. When I still lived in the US, I heard ppl complain about the price of gas all the time. However, I never heard complaints about our dependency on gas or the economic problem that the cheapest stuff there is per volume felt expensive to buy.

I read the German source article someone else posted and you’re spot on. The thinner air is the main advantage for the reason you mentioned. But apparently snow-reflected light off the surrounding peaks is a significant factor as well. I find that interesting.
