What made you choose your Fediverse Instance?
Why did you choose your Fediverse Instance, does it have a bigger meaning than it was a bigger instance or was it for a certain reason? Did you have to be on your instance you chose?

idk. Since most instances are fine and mostly all see each other I didn’t see a strong appeal to any particular one over the others. I initially joined lemmy.world since it was the biggest, but then I joined and stuck with feddit.uk since it’s the main uk instance and I’m in the uk, and I guess I like the appeal of a slightly more specialised/smaller instance. Seems as good a reason as any.
Choosing an instance seems like a substantial barrier for new users imo.
Cuz shit just works
Always amazing when things do that
Its a decently sized Piefed Server that allows me to talk about Politics.
I used to use Piefed dot World and before that Lemmy Word but they explicitly and openly support the misogynist, transphobic, pro-war, pro-genocide tankie Lemmy Developers, so I don’t go there anymore.
EDIT: The hecks this little fedicate bubble?
Wait, are you talking about .ml? I wasn’t aware of .world being really bad.
World is not as bad, but they financially support developers like Desalines who OWN AND OPERATE ML.
Oh fuckin shit. That’s why I just joined PieFed here. I’ll be sure to block .world too
Dring the Reddit Migration, this was the first one I heard about, so I picked it. Haven’t been bothered to change it since.
Do you feel you will change in the future?
I know there’s been an okay amount of people that have said about how they moved from Lemmy World due to moderation over reach along with often being de-federated from other instances on bias’ (I have no evidence of this, just comments from others to this post)
Probably not, unless something major happens.
Slrpnk was down for a few days and the admin was super transparent about what was going on (iirc, they were on a business trip and something happened to their home server that needed a physical button press). I was happy with that level of communication, and occasional down time is good for getting out and touching grass.
edit: I was on sdf before, but they’re a lot less transparent about maintenance issues.
Having admins that tell you what’s going on is so helpful. Also yes having a balance between online life and real life is really good to have. Well I still like having my servers there for me and others when it’s needed it’s nice to know you are finding a silver-lining in it sometimes going down for maintenance and other things.

The need for almost seamless posting between personal feed microblogging and Threadiverse exchanging, alongside text formatting features and large-enough max character limit. This is why I ended up sticking with Calckey.
@dsilverz@calckey.world What’s the benefits of sticking with Calckey over something like Sharkey or another Misskey Fork? As from my research I can find Calckey has had 2 years since the last update to the code, is it even being maintained anymore?
Also agree with you fully, the features of a Misskey Fork is so amazing to have with the 3k character limit and utility with the custom emojis and other features are a god send.
@fedicate@break3.social @asklemmy@lemmy.world
Most (if not all) Misskey instances I could find were Japanese-speaking, and I don’t know Japanese. Something similar applies to most Sharkey instances, many I could find were Japanese-speaking.
There was also the factor “open for sign-ups”: at the time, calckey.world was among the few instances where registrations were open (most instances are closed for registration, requiring an invite or requiring the admin to manually set up a new account for someone). At the time, I was using Friendica, which often experienced (and still experiences) downtimes, and I was trying to find something similar to Friendica, or at least something as similar as possible.
This is something I’ve been trying to solve, well our social.fedicate.org instance is currently invite only we hope that we can open it up to registrations in the future. We are currently settings things up to set things up correctly as the break3.social instance (the one this account users) is a business instance for projects and other stuff mainly worked on by @sam
Hopefully we see more Sharkey instance that are english based in the future as I know a good few that are english based are Trans / LGBT based what I don’t think is your cup of tea (or it might be I don’t know)
Smurf pie is the undisputed best ;)
Or maybe I liked Piefed features better than the previous I was using?
Heard pretty good things about Piefed, never have been able to try it out myself yet but it’s on the list of things to try out.
My girlfriend
Your girlfriend is on the Instance or created the instance?
She is on it
Blåhaj.
Well the german feddit.de stopped working where I initially was after the reddit exodus thing. Feddit.org became the best successor. They have a sensible block list and a lot of german and european communities so I like it here. And I think the mod team is doing a pretty good job
Instance??
Just whatever’s most popular in English. So lemmy.world. And lemmy.ca because I’m Canadian. Any suggestions from others?
The other furry instance shut down. 😞
so I liked kbin a lot and it was cause of ernest and what he was doing. then when it kinda fell apart I joined a small mbin instance based on what they guy who runs it wrote which was mostly just about being very much against censorship. Then piefed came about and what im on now is kinda the main instance and honestly its about the devs again who just were passionate about making something great and really expanding capabilities and such. I use a web portal and mostly im following the features I guess with features being things that put as much control in the hands of the user as possible.
Yeah it was sad seeing Kbin fall apart, tried Mbin and it’s great but doesn’t have the same feel in some ways sadly, Maybe the project could get a heart and grow in there own direction in the future as there’s so many things they could do to become a great all around Instance but heard amazing things about Piefed and it’s on the list of Software I hope to visit and try out in the near future.
yeah mbin forked because earnest was a bit to controlling but honestly it kinda felt like a good mmo in maintenance mode. Piefed is sorta the best of both as while it certainly has some stand out hard working devs it also has a development community talking and trying to make it and taking feedback. Seriously I have not paid attention at times only to find out there were a bunch more options in the configs and im like woa.
when I started here there were not many people and only some instances were big enough to interact. Have you been to .ml? only crazy ppl. So I came to world and prayed for the best
Seconing this. Plus I didn’t know that many instances, and was too lazy to change.
I went with .ml because (IIRC, I might be wrong) that was the instance that the people who made Lemmy used. I’m not wild about how .ml censors some words but it doesn’t bother me enough to change.
