PlayStation discs will soon be gone!

Wtf #sony ?

The #playstation account announced in a blog post that they will stop making game discs altogether. http://play.st/4v86Wg3

This means :

- No buying second hand. Once the game is not sold anymore nobody can buy it
- Can not bring the game to someone’s house and play together, now you need to log into your account
- Sony can, for any or no reason remove a game from your library
- If you paid extra for a PS5 with a disc drive, too bad, you can’t use the drive you paid extra for with games beyond 2028!
- Overall, a very slippery slope for ownership.

  • @Skyline969 I meant you won’t be able ti use the disc drive for that’s still being sold full price today for games beyond 2028. I edited the post to clear that up.

Also, PC gaming is digital but most of the times you have the game files downloaded somewhere, you can make a backup, and unless the game is online only you can theoratically play it forever.

With this, once Sony eventually takes down the store just like they did for the PS Vita, then you won’t be able to play games at all, and will very likely be the proud owner of a fancy black and white brick. They can also remove games from your library and this will make you unable to buy used games.

Most games still have Steam DRM either way and you still need Steam at the very least to unlock the DRM at least once before you can run it offline. The only saving grace here is that with PC, the option to crack it is a lot more viable.

You can backup your digital games on a PS5 as well. Either to an internal SSD or to an external hard drive (though you can’t play PS5 games off an external drive). Maybe we hang with different crowds, but I do not know anyone who makes a habit of keeping installers for their PC games. They either have it downloaded on their games drive or it’s uninstalled, only to be reinstalled from the store they got it from.

Also, you can still download your games on the Vita. You can’t buy new ones but you can absolutely download all of your past purchases. Hell I believe that’s true of the PS3 and the PSP even, but I no longer have non-modified versions of those consoles to test that.
