Sure there Tim.
The only thing, between the two (Valve and Epic), that has held gaming back, were those stupid Epic exclusives. Fuck them.
Yeah all that open source and open hardware options I have are really holding things back.
Fuck off you tool.
Projecting are we?
I’d rather never play a game again than use the Epic client even once, so I’m not sure you are correct there, Timmy.
Ohh, so it’s NOT all the paid exclusives that held gaming back? Fuck off Tim.
Oh yes, let’s all listen to the man that said if a game is to be successful it must launch on their competitors platform, Steam.
Sour grapes at the people rejecting the ai?
With every passing day it looks more and more like he’s just an undercover Valve agent doing absolutely everything in his power to push as many people as possible away from Steam’s competitors…
I claim Tim Sweeny is a little bitch. See how easy that is.
Let us point at him and laugh, again!
Oh alright, I’ll install steam again and buy a few games.
See what happens Weeney? That’s what you get for being such a whiney little lying bitch.
Sweeny is the Trump of gaming
Talks nothing but shit and has more power than he should while being little more than a bad joke? Yeah, that tracks.
I don’t particularly like Valve/Steam and their monopoly built with support from child gambling but this is sore loser posting from Sweeney et al.
There are plenty of abstraction libraries that make Steamworks just one of several backends.
i feel like this is one of the biggest valid criticism of steam. and imo the fact sweeney never mentions it says something about his own intentions
You gotta raise the rents Tim. You gotta stop letting Valve live rent free in your head. At this point you’re just giving them free press and good free press at that.
Also, Fuck you, Tim.
I’m looking forward to how the industry changes when (or optimistically?, if) all those AI investments go down the drain. I’m assuming neither Valve nor Nintendo fell into the AI craze while almost everyone else did (I have no source other than vibes though, can’t name any Sony AI stuff actually), but how much will they stay ahead?
Mind you, monopoly and a potential economic crisis isn’t good. Everything will get worse. I just think it’ll be entertaining if this is how Sweeney is acting already.
Well, Steam was the reason I had no qualms swapping Windows for Linux. After that I discovered Indie games in the Applications Manager and grew a renewed interest in finding little gems of games, new and old. I can even play games with friends who still use Windows without problems. So for me, Steam enriched gaming. Oh yeah, last week I deleted my Epic Games account with I don’t know how many games I acquired for free over the years, because quality beats quantity. There may have been some good games in there, but I don’t want to drag a scrapyard with me just because somewhere in there may be a nice snack. Also I would have to install an AI-slop app to start it. That’s a nah for me. Goodbye Tim.
My own ease at migrating to Linux as a PC gamer was almost entirely due to the Steam platform but I have had much less success with my GoG collection so I am still holding out for the Linux based platform that they have teased as in-work for a while now.
Epic games’ freebies were something that I would regularly pick up but I honestly haven’t felt any desire to try and access or install any of them since I moved from Win10. Ultimately, I am just hoping that accepting the free games resulted in higher operating costs for Epic and I think I may have purchased one or two heavily discounted games in 5 years. Hopefully I can be forgiven for those past indiscretions.
Steam isn’t perfect but I will support it 100% over that other option since I think Valve has done more to improve the quality and accessibility to high quality games on Linux than anyone else. Sweeney and other pricks like him can keep whining all they want; not gonna even play the tiniest violin for him.
Which games couldn’t you play from GOG? Heroic does its job very reliably for me. Basically eveything I throw at it runs. Witcher 3 (even the new remastered Version), Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Baldurs Gate 1, Arx Fatalis, System Shock 2, Syndicate, old Ultima classics (like e.g. Underworld) etc. Even modern games from Epic seem to pose no problem. Achievements get synced to the GOG cloud usually. Only thing I am unsure is which games sync their savegames to the cloud. So I back up all the savestates regularly.
I remember spending a week in 2008ish getting TF2 running on Fedora. It was terrible but it mostly worked.
Now, thanks to Valve and twenty ish years of continuing development and support of Linux gaming, my kids can play practically any game on Linux out of the box.
They’ve earned a mountain of respect from me for that.
