It’d be nice if itch.io could filter out graphic novels, which is like 99 percent of everything when I search for categories

Problem is itch has a very low max disk size requirement. They wont host games over 2gigs. That basically leaves you with graphic novels and 2d games.

As an indie dev let me just say wed rather not limit our game to GameCube graphics. No offense to that special era and esthetic

You are still asking us to signicantly downscale our design goals to accommodate itch. We are releasing our game free on steam anyway. So its not like we are hurting our community by choosing steam. But yes tonnes of games fit within itch platform and that’s awesome. Just not all game designs.

Steam and itchio are not curated (or only minimal). So naturally those places will also attract junk. The tradeoff is the free and open market without any organization telling what is allowed and what not (at least for the most part). Similar to Apple vs Google store, I prefer the Google store with more freedom over Apple. The price is more junk, but I want to decide.

At least two of those are preliminary Doom ports to the NES. There’s a third one that’s only on Github.

It’s almost like the chatbot that codes has made arbitrarily complex goals massively easier. Will that produce many low-effort or half-finished projects? Sure… but so did Unity. Ninety percent of everything is crap. You have to focus on the exceptions, or you’ll drown in it.

I think that’s the right way to see it. Somewhere there’s a ten year old kid making 6-7 brain rot games, and when that creativity matures everybody’s gonna piss their pants at the new genius. It’s well worth it to endure the initial wave of slop.

It reminds me of when the Kindle became popular and the market was inundated with shit 99c novels. How many great authors of today self published their bad first effort at the time?
