Unless you have a massive marketing budget, it’s futile. Any such app, and that includes social media in general, needs a massive user base to be viable. And outside of a geeky minority, most people wouldn’t care it’s open source.

Technology@lemmy.world•The Great Software Quality Collapse: How We Normalized CatastropheEnglish
0·1 year agoWhat does this have to do with .NET? AFAIK all the programs mentioned in the article are written in JavaScript, except Calculator. Which is probably Swift.
Or just
services.AddSingleton<X>. There’s plenty to criticize in C#, or any language, but this ain’t it. Most of the new language features just make the code shorter without loosing clarity. Really liking newer C# versions.
My theory: they’re just trying to push stock price for the short term as much as possible (by looking good on paper). Then they can cash out and let others figure out what to do with the dumpster fire in the long term.
They’ve made so many short-sighted decisions with Reddit lately, burning all good will of the community in the process, I can’t really explain it another way.
In theory? Could be cool in some cases I guess. But I don’t really want more tech, nor do I want another device I need to charge. In practice? I don’t trust Meta, or any of these large tech corporations, to not turn this into a privacy and security nightmare. Also a waste of electricity - these AI models will need to analyze a lot of audio and video to be useful.
You might want to highlight what differentiates it from Obsidian, except being open source. Just from looking at the page, I don’t know what it means to have organization capabilities from Notion?
Out of all the lifestyle changes we can make, this is so unbelievably minor it is not worth mentioning, let alone make a campaign for.
Until the government and corporations take climate change seriously, making changes on an individual level won’t make a meaningful difference. Doesn’t mean we should do nothing… but come on, this is just stupid.

Mildly Interesting@lemmy.world•A growing number of americans don't read newspapers. They get their news from online influencers. The right dominates the online ecosystem.
0·1 year agoWe need to do better in supporting independent journalism, and journalism in general. Replacing perhaps slightly biased newspapers with influencers is not a good solution… just makes it a million times worse. False information can spread so easily nowadays because influencers don’t even bother checking anything, let alone asking experts. A lot of influencers also blatantly pander to their audience.

0·1 year agoAh yes, selling me something that is already available but is just locked behind software. And then trying to frame that as somehow a good thing for customers. Just insulting.

0·1 year agoTrue, I may not have given SNW the chance it deserved. I’ve watched all 3 seasons of Picard though and almost 2 seasons of Discovery

0·1 year agoFor me, Star Trek was mostly about a possible brighter future. Humanity overcame the issues on earth, no longer relies on money/capitalism, etc. When your watch the crew on TNG, they are acting professionally and with a code of ethics.
Discovery is so miserable. Everyone is angry all the time, there’s racism, lots of unnecessary drama, people acting extremely unprofessionally. Same with Picard. Especially sour about how they made one of the best characters - Q - also very serious and miserable. He could’ve been the comedic relief the series needed, without undermining the rest of the story. The “Picard speeches” are just badly written too, so whimsical and empty.
We have a million dystopian Sci-fi series already, why do we need more? I feel writers are no longer able to tell compelling stories without fake drama. It’s possible to engage with modern day issues in a different way, especially by showing how to be better.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•About Star Trek Starfleet Academy blacklashEnglish
0·1 year agoHonestly, after Picard and Discovery I’m pretty much done with “New Trek”, I’ve lost my interest. For this I’m not even the target audience - this seems aimed at teens / young adults. And it’s once again produced by Alex Kurzman. So… yeah, I’m gonna give it a pass.
I cancelled it when they started to crack down on family plans with separate households. It just wasn’t worth the money to me anymore. I wonder how much more price hikes the remaining customers are going to tolerate. At some point it becomes cheaper to just outright buy music…
I like being able to turn on a movie or TV series I enjoy while doing some exercises at home.
Having to go somewhere with that annoying workout music blaring 24/7, needing to wait for equipment to become free… just not for me.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What communities or instances do you have blocked to make your Lemmy experience more enjoyable?
0·1 year agoI have stopped using the “All” feed for that reason, it’s best to find communities that you’re interested in and only look at those in my experience. Finding them without the All feed is the challenge though. I’ve found Lemmy to be quite nice when it was new, but it seems this is the way all communities go when they reach a certain size.
Yes, LLMs are too costly for this and require a cloud service, smaller models could run on the client. The main difficulty is getting the training data and preparing it for machine learning.

0·2 years agoI wouldn’t mind if they were all fictional, but the massive Porsche logo? Come on, I’m not paying for a game just to see product placements. It’s like Death Stranding with the energy drinks again.

Is it perfect? No. It does have bugs and issues which can be hard to track down. But it is free, respects my privacy, respects my choices, doesn’t use dark patterns, doesn’t contain ads, has lots of options to configure it, it’s super fast… so I love it.
